I can get 7 Hawthorn trees for free.  Are they worth sawing?

You may like the wood. Known for use in carving. A fine grained wood. If trees are free from rot, then should get some interesting pieces (as with about any wood that is free from decay). Might even have some spalting but that can only be seen after cutting the trees.

Maybe if you were there when they cut them to see the ends of the logs, that will help your decision.

From what I've heard it moves a lot when drying, but it is a pretty wood.

I have never seen a hawthorne big enough to saw.  They are more bushes than trees.

The Green Hawthorn shown and discribed in my Audubon Field Guide to trees looks exactly like the tree we are cutting down.  The guide shows a tree not a bush.

I suspect that what you have is another species.  Do you have any pictures?

I have a Hawthorn in my front lot. While it isn't big it is definitely a tree. It's beautiful in the spring when it blooms. I think the state record for MO is around 15 inches diameter.

I thought Qweaver showed pics, but they were posted in his Lombardy Poplar thread...he switched to this new one but I thought it was in regards to the same trees.
