Yep, a young woodworker came out today and we took down about 15 trees.  All were in the range of 1" DBH. :D  He wanted the saplings to make hiking staffs, and brought along samples of some of his work.  I didn't get pics, but they were quite nice.  We got some Pecan, Maple, Persimmon, Camphor, Cherry, and Magnolia.  He also got a couple of pieces of Chinese Privet just to see what it would be like.  If it turns out decent, I have a gold mine!! 8) 8)  Oh, almost forgot we found a long straight piece of Crepe Myrtle growing in the woods where a house used to be.  Can't wait to see what he does with that!

Anyway, I invited him to sign up here and I hope he does.  Seemed like a good guy, even though he is a lawyer. :D

Thats pretty neat. Most people really over look the non-timber products on their land.

I just gotta ask, did you use the boring method on the leaners?
Things turn out best for people who make the best of how things turn out.

There was a fellow around these parts, some time ago, who collected pin cherry sticks for canes and walking sticks. He would pick them up from thinning sites a lot of times. He got some help for awhile until his market was flooded and never seen him around again. :D ;) He had a method where he could carve them up pretty quick.

I never see folks out walking with a stick in the neighborhood. I'de say there were 5 or 6 folks out walking on the road once in a while. So the market is pretty limited in my observation. ;)

Probably had to use a couple of wedges to keep them from sitting back on the saw.   ;D

Good on ya DanG. Hope we get some pics of a few walker sticks from your 'trees'.

I did some "logging" today too, a spruce tree 14 yrs old.  24' to the tip.

I reckon if his lawyering goes south, he can fall back on his walking stick business.

Reminds me of a tree I dragged home one Christmas when I was thinning some plantation pine on the old farm. Dropped the tree, though it looked a bit big, so took 3 ft off and dragged it home. Still had to take another 3 ft off so it would fit in the house   :D
