Hello everyone, We are new to the milling business in the Stuarts Draft, Waynesboro area and we are looking for some logs to purchase. does anyone have any suggestions on how to find places that have them. We are having a great time with our mill but are always looking for some pointers.

yep i think he's in va.

in my limited experience looking for logs it's helpful to come up with what you're willing to pay beforehand so that when folks contact you they know right up front.   also you'll be way ahead to pay a little more for quality logs vs junk.  (not that all free logs are worthless)
that's why you must play di drum...to blow the big guys mind!

Try Craig's list.  Logs are advertised there almost daily in my area.  I could mill full time if I wanted.  I just don't have anything to do with that much wood.

Miller, you need to contact local tree service guys, the big time loggers will have little intrest supplying you with logs.Logs too big to chip are not valued highly buy the tree guys many have to pay to dump them. Most I have talked to are more than glad to exchange logs for boards.Yes they are yard trees but with care and a detector they are worth cutting. Stuarts Draft put him in Va.   :)

This is the reason that locations and sawmill type is valuable information to have in your signature.   ;D

Finding a log supplier can be difficult at times, most already have mills they deliver to. I have talked with a few loggers at the local gas station and just asked if they could ever bring a load.  Once you get started, it should get your foot in the door with several.  Having the means to unload is big factor in getting some of them to your mill.
only have a few chain saws I'm not suppose to use, but will at times, one dog Dolly, pretty good dog, just not sure what for yet,  working on getting the gardening back in order, and kinda thinking on maybe a small bbq bizz,  thinking about it,

Welcome to the forum.
I have had the same dilema on how to find log suppliers. Here is the thread.

I did not catch where you are from but first let me welcome you to the forum, I too am new to this site and you will find a great group of people willing to help and share with you there experience which before the internet and forums was unheard of!

I use craigslist.com and have had great luck.  I am always looking for barn beams/siding and a week ago I posted a new listing and today alone I had 5 calls offering me what I was looking for at a much lower cost then I could ever had dreamed of getting.  I have gotten a bunch of calls as well for logs (took some black walnut) and today I got the call I have been waiting for which was (30) 10" x 10" Chestnut reclaimed barn beams (i love chestnut).

Good luck with your new venture!

Yep. Try Craigslist. Smaller quantities is probably what you need. Weed out the junk yard trees. Try putting up postings at feed stores or local livestock auctions. A lot of times a farmer is taking out a few trees that are damaged from wind. Expanding or pushing back a field. Had two calls today. A farmer who dropped some cottonwood a couple of years ago. Its going to be iffy if they are any good, but think he will haul a load in to see. Then made a phone call to a lawyer that owns the place next to where we are logging. Picked up a nice timber of cottonwood to log. We got salvage jobs to go to everywhere. If there is a local farm magazine, you might put a classified ad in saying you would like to buy smaller batches of logs that come from the timber. So much stuff is dozed up because the landowner does not think they are worth anything, and no one wants them. He probably has called the professional big loggers and they just weren't interested in a couple of thousand board feet. Sometimes a power line company comes through and trims from the ground up. May not be a lot of logs, but might be worth your while.
