I have been conversing with a very nice gentleman for the last year or so, in his 80's,  great shape for his age in my opinion, very likeable.  He is planning on building many sheds and the like, he has moved to our area from mich.  He has gave me his cut list, and a basic cut list it is, 2X6's, 10' and 16',  he did not know why the 16's cost a bit more,   after this long I still don't know if he will ever come through with his logs,  I guess time as usualy will tell,
only have a few chain saws I'm not suppose to use, but will at times, one dog Dolly, pretty good dog, just not sure what for yet,  working on getting the gardening back in order, and kinda thinking on maybe a small bbq bizz,  thinking about it,

I had that situation once, quite a few years back.

Sawing for an older gentleman and he questioned the very same thing, why a 16' board would cost more than a 10' board.

I just told him that it's only because the 16' is 6' longer than the 10' and the last 6' has to be sawed too.

He said oh, now I understand.

He later said "I just thought a cut was a cut, regardless of the length".

So I said to him, "that's where the board foot term comes into play".

After that all was fine and he's been a repeat customer every year!

Sometimes when dealing with older people, you'll have to bite your tongue a little now and then, and don't raise your voice.

Good luck!

No doubt, about politics, I cherish the eldely, I call the lumber yard, and with his timber, which he said needs to come down, the price is still less than half the cost of buyning kiln dried stock. Plus He wants full 2X's  cant find this anywhere except from a  mill.  All is good,  in addition, he and his wife want to buy some eggs for their chicken heard,

I actually prefer to deal with older folks. They're usually honest, sometimes brutally honest, and they always let you know what they REALLY THINK.  ::)

A 16 footer compared to a 10 footer is like an 80 year old compared to a 50 year old.

Chief,

Hate to break this to ya, but there's only one alternative to "getting older" and as one of them country singers once said "Everybody wants to go to Heaven, but nobody wants to go right now..."

Hopefully we'll all be getting better as we get older, but in reality that probably a parabolic curve for most of us...

I don't have to work very hard on being friendly and respectful,  he was kinda looking for some help on design, but this is just a bit out of my league,  I can help, but loads and designs are out of my purvue,  given a cut list I can do,
