My dad thinks it a butternut. I'm not sure I think its just another elm but its lighter than siberian elm and darker than english..  ???

Appears to be an elm. What is the weight of the wood, heavy like elm or much lighter in weight?

Can you get a pic up close of the pith along its length?  Butternut and walnut I believe have similar looking open pith, except walnut is chambered. Google can fill in some of those details with pics too.

A closeup pic of the end grain will also help go a ways to identify if elm or not.

Pic of the bark will help too.

Way too dark for butternut. Is the log fairly fresh? If it's a butternut or walnut family it will be yellow under the bark. Butternut is very light and soft. It also has a chambered pith with thick dark chocolate brown diaphragms, walnut has chambered pith and buff colored but not on current growth, delayed a year.

I think it may be catalpa.  What would be identifying features of a catalpa?

If it is elm, the latewood pores as seen from the end grain will be arranged in distinct wavy bands.

Here is American Elm on the end grain. See the wavy bands of pores.

Catalpa won't have the wavy bands.

Looks a whole lot like red elm to me, the grain and the thick orange inner bark.

Once you learn a few basics, you will be amazed by how easy it is to narrow things down to only a few potential candidates.

"Understanding Wood" by Bruce Hoadley is one good one with very good pictures.
