These were both projects for our wedding earlier in May (well, there were a lot of projects for the wedding, but that's a topic all its own!).  We wanted to give our parents something to say thanks for all their help, and this is where we ended up.  So somewhere in the midst of wedding planning and preparations, I managed to get these done.  We presented these to them the day before the wedding, and both her parents as well as mine loved them.

First up is a flower box for her parents.  Took a cedar log, whittled a little bit with the chainsaw and then cleaned it up with the angle grinder and a sanding wheel.  Finished with 3 coats of Helmsman Spar Varnish Urethane.

Next up is a bench for my parents.  They have a walking trail back in the woods and the bench that's been back there for years is currently laying in a pile on the ground.  I used the same, wildly inefficient process as my table build from before - hey, it works.  Finished with 3 coats of Helmsman Spar Varnish Urethane.

That bench will be a fine companion to the walking trail.  Both projects are very well done.

Nice work!

You raised the bar on some ideas I had for my cedar.  :)

You used the sanding wheel to "debark" the logs?

VT_Forestry

Thanks guys!  :)

This log had sat around for awhile, so the bark came off pretty easy.  I actually used an orbital sander with 120 grit to remove the more stubborn parts - the sanding disc on the angle grinder would have been easier but would have removed too much material and taken away from the natural form of the log.  I primarily used the sanding disc to remove the chainsaw marks from the hollowed out part.

A fine job on both projects.  I can bet they are much appreciated by the folks. :)
