Jeff

Went to the U.P. this week to help get the cabin open for the summer.  While there I had one evening where I braved the bugs and took a tromp in the woods near Stalwart. This was a beautiful, mostly hard maple forest that is very open underneath. The Property owner invited me over to look for Leeks. They were everywhere! The soil was very rocky, but very rich. I added a couple pictures where I pulled a broken rock apart to show the leeks growing in the crack.  I dug up some to clean, and I also dug up some to bring home and try to plant. I've planted them in several places around the house here in hopes at least one place turns out to be a happy spot. :)

I can't get Tammy to eat any, but I think maybe if I make some venison, mushroom and leek soup, she might try it, however once I eat it, she may not come within 100 yards of me for the next few days. :)

Thanks Jeff, for showing some closeup pictures of the foliage and "fruit", because I was curious.  I have read that after eating a bait, even your sweat is "aromatic", or maybe "atomic".   :o   :D

I really like these. They are sort of sweet, yet have some fire to them. :)  Perhaps they will do well here, and you can try one at the pig roast. :)  I should got out and see how they look after putting them in the ground yesterday.

I can remember back when I was in school, we had quite a few kids get kicked out of school for 2 days for eating leeks the night before.

They can be smelled from afar, but if you eat just one, you can't smell leeks anymore!

Jeff,I got those things growing  all over the place by my sawmill and sugarhouse, they are good  but i thought they were field garlic, i pick a bunch every year.Cheryl chops them up and uses them like minced garlic.Cheryl looked leeks up in her field guides and thats exactly what ours are!! Don

I had thought that the topic could be taken a couple of different ways but decided not to say anything at the time. :-X

They add a real flavor to soups and salads. What doesn't Tammy like about them/ Will she eat onions?

Many of my transplanted Leeks seem to be alive. The foliage has died back on all of them, but they have sent up shoots to flower, at least the ones that are either hidden or protected. The ones that were planted more openly have been all browsed off by the rabbit vermin.
