I understand green wood needs to dry out before using for building, but what about standing dead wood (typically Elm) or logs that have laid in a pile for several years. Would dead Elm need to be stacked and dried any more than it is? I'm talking logs with no bark and cut to probably 1 inch thickness.

I also might  be able to aquire some logs that have been cut and laying for 5-6 years, Red and white Oak, W. Cherry. would these logs ( up to 22 in. dia) need stacked to dry after cutting to 1 in.  boards?

I would suggest that drying is still needed, as the MC will likely be around 20% MC.  For interior use, 7% MC is needed.  Also, heating the wood to over 133 F throughout will kill insects that would be common in such old logs.

Gene has a typo there. Heat to 130-135 to kill bugs. I would add that the White Oak will still be surprisingly wet.
