Do you have dog trading in your area?  For the second month in a row we've watched folks from out of State bring in several pups and give, sell or trade with other folks from yet another State. But our State is the middle ground, or meeting point at a truck stop. The folks will bring in some pups, others will check the pups out and write down something on a clipboard and they load them in their vehicle apparently taking the pups away..

Well, curiosity got the best of us, we set about to find if we could buy or trade a dog. "No", said the couple taking them, "they are for 'adopt-a-pet' and you can't have one here, you have to come to our State to get one." So now, we're confounded. folks are missing dogs nearly each week in our home county, my last beagle pup disappeared before my very eyes this past June! Never to be seen again.  I  think the dog trading may be legitimate, because it's too open, too frequent, not sure of the sources of dogs though.

So they are buying and selling out of state where the dogs likely can't be traced and they refuse to sell to you. :-\ Transporting stolen property across state lines is a federal offense, you might talk to the appropriate authorities.

This is not a dog stealing practice - it is a legitimate way that rescue animals can find good homes.  My wife is a veterinarian who is very active in animal rescue, and she has successfully placed several rescues by this method.

Across the country there are lots of local animal rescue groups that are staffed by volunteers with limited resources.  They work with local Vets, shelters, and individuals to try and place quality animals in good homes.  Typically no money changes hands; they do what they do out of love and compassion for the animals.

Typically there is a surplus of unwanted animals in the southern portion of the county, and more capacity for these animals in the northeast.  There are frequent adoptions that take place, with volunteers transporting the animals a few hundred miles and handing them off to another volunteer, who takes them on the next leg of their trip.  Without the volunteers, it would be cost prohibitive to transport most of these animals, and they would end up being euthanized.

The animals are only transported when there is a willing adoptee, and they have already seen photo's, etc of their new pet (or if it's another rescue org, of their new rescue).  Typically no money changes hands - it's all for the well being of the animals.  When funds do change hands it is usually for veterinary services performed before transport, such as spay, neuter and shots.

That may explain the trading but have found that Missouri is the "Puppy Mill Capital of U.S.". As I stated, I think it was ligit because of so many folks that witnessed the actions, the pups seemed well taken care of and playful [several mixed breeds]  Don't think it had anything to do with our local dog theft going on.
