This is what happens when you have a temper and decide to chuck a brand new MS290 because you hate flippy caps....
My brother inlaws saw by the way....

Well I'm not so certain flippy caps were the greatest idea Stihl ever had .I guess some people like them but they are the minority .

It's not an 8 dollar flippy cap that goes bad but a 29 cent o-ring that swells up and causes lose of temper .

Now I wonder here .At one time Baileys had some bright idea to make a better flippy but that about died on the vine along with their version of an elasto -start. Evidently somebody that makes orange and white saws must have leaned on them or something .

No. Just a concrete floor.
The clutch cover busted the hole in the fuel tank.
The broken fins happened at an earlier date. He says he's not sure how that happened.

Do you ever lend him your saws?  ;D

Don't think I am in the minority, and over 10 years on the saw with no problem on the "29 cent o-ring" either.
Simple "insert, turn 1/4 turn, fold handle back down" works well for me. Oh yes, I'd say I like them. ;)

Well I'm tickled you're happy with them .I haven't been so lucky nor has many in this area of the country .Maybe we have bad gas or something.

I've only managed to break one .Since then I have a healthy supply of O-rings  on hand .If I'm not mistaken they're M25 by 3.5 .

Al_Smith

Now lets back up here a moment Been There .Are you one of those folks who  run non ethanol or AV gas in the saw? If so that explains why the flippys have treated you so kindly .That buna -n o-ring does not like ethanol at all .Makes it turn into a rock .

Fatcougar

Haaaahaaahaaa!   :D  I can't imagine throwing my chainsaws......  Love me some flippy caps.
The o-ring material should be Viton, otherwise known as Perflouroelastomer which is compatable with ethanol induced gasoline.  Buna N is marginal for gasoline use with or without the ethanol and will degrade or swell fairly quickly.  Replacements should be Viton with around an 80 durometer.
I don't get the issues with the flippies, you just have to pay a LITTLE attention. :)

They certainly make a material more compatable than standard buna-n no doubt .Fact some of those rings I have are a brownish  type synthetic rubber unlike the traditional black buna-n stuff .

I still don't get the idea because the standard screw on caps worked for decades .The later screw types where more protruding and screwed on and off more easily that the earlier ones . They used to scrench those flatter caps on and off which eventually wallered out the slot then it took a pair of Channel lock pliers --or a new cap .

trapper

I have no problem with them. Just remember the position they were in when you take them off.  I use only non ethanol
premium gas in my saws

Evidently you folks that like the flippys never had an o-ring swell up on you .If it ever does you'll see what I mean .You can't get that thing latched back in short of beating on it with a mallet .It has nothing at all to do with orienting the cap  properly .Try shoving 5 pounds of potatoes in a two pound sack .It won't fit simple as that .

I ran over my old Craftsman saw with the tractor, mashed it into the mud, broke the "left hand" handle off it. Still started and ran just fine after I replaced that.
I do like my 290 much better though!

I hate to admit it but I love flippy caps.

Pound for pound I can't think of anything more expensive than chainsaws that are willingly and intentionally broken by owners over sometimes minor annoyances. Problems with a chainsaw can just cause so much frustration I guess!  But, I have to admit we do the same thing too.  On bad days we may get caught playing a game of shooting Mccullochs.

A game of shooting McCulloughs, that sounds like a good stress reliever!

Mini Mac skeet?  Sounds like fun.  You guys allowed to have machine guns up there?

Pretty much!  You can get some nice perfect holes in those thin cast mini mac housings.

I'm going to go with no on the machine gun, we would end up with more scrap weight in casings than mccullochs.

     Howdy,

At least he has a reason to buy an engine housing with screw in caps now.

Now while I am in full agreement that a Mini Mac would make a great target let's step back a pace .

I probabley have the fastest one in the world or at least one of the few with a tuned pipe exhaust .That said it's still not my favorite model of saw and really rates nearly towards the bottom .

However I highly recommend every aspiring chainsaw mechanic own one until you can't stand working on it any more .If nothing else if you can keep your cool long enough to get one running you can work on anything .

I'm with ya brotha beenthere. I love the "Flippy Caps" on my 310. It's only 6 years old though, and I seldom allow any alcohol in it. I dislike the fuel cap on my 024 AVS. I've put a half dozen gaskets on that leaky 'ol thing in the last 30 years. I always buy an extra for the next time it leaks, but I put them extras in such a safe place that no one ever finds them!

Marty Marty Marty .I've got an 024 that doesn't leak a drop .Further more I don't do like many and scrench it closed .

Fact I think it's a neat little saw .
