This is a willow hollow form that I turned this week.  I normally don't like turning willow (it tends to be soft and fuzzy) but this wood was too pretty to pass up.  12 inches diameter by 4 inches tall (the tree was large but hollow and 4" was all I had to work with).

Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

Very nice work. What would you use that "willow hollow form" for? It is very unique and beautiful wood.

That is some really pretty wood. bg

Very nice work Den.    Was the wood from the flare at the base of the tree (compression wood)?   Also, what tool did you use to hollow it out?   What finish did you use?    Exceptional results  :) :)

thefarm: I believe this is Black Willow (Salix nigra)

justallen1: It is decorative only

Left Coast Chris:  This piece was part of the trunk (about 5 ft above ground), I don't know how much of the tree was curly but I hope to get another piece.  I used a curved tool (patterned after John Jordan's tools) mounted in a Sorby arm brace.  The finish is rattle can lacquer.

All; thanks for the compliments.

That is a terrific.  Black Willow is one of the most unique and prettiest woods that I have ever sawn.  It makes wonderful wall paneling and as you have shown, very nice turned pieces.   :)

Outstanding wood and workmanship  8) what is the wall thickness?
If it can't be nailed or glued then screw it

Amazing job. It must be nerve-racking  to turn the inside. How do you dry a blank of wood like that to prevent cracking of the finished bowl?

A real nice turning of a real nice piece of wood.  I know hollow forms can be a challenge and have done some but generally they're not functional enough for my tastes.

Here's a vase I turned just before Christmas from maple, red or Norway I don't remember, from the base of the tree.  As a vase, it probably is too wide at the top so I turned a disc that fits maybe 2" down in the throat with a 2-3" hole that the stems can be put through to control splay.  I sized the inside so a narrow jar could fit to hold water.   It's not quite a foot tall and about 8" across.  And useful.

That's awesome! I bet the fact that it is willow adds to the perceived thinness of the walls, since the wood is so light. It begs to be handled :)
