from a huge operation down the road where they are building a fresh water reservoir. They are building a couple of dams and clearing 100s of acres of mature mixed species forest to make way for the project. I'm trying to set up a meeting with the guy in charge of the clearing and wondering what the best approach would be to gain approval to purchase maybe the 30 biggest trees they take down. Not that familiar with how these operations work or how they contract out the sale of the lumber. Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed and have best chance at successfully purchasing such a small amount of lumber with specific parameters like this (only healthy trees at least 36" in diameter or greater)? Any info or related experience would be appreciated! Thanks,

See if you can find out what mills the wood is going to that you are interested in, chances are its all under contract already with an operation of that size, but perhaps the mill would work out a deal to sell you a few.

As i understand it, most conventional mills don't take logs over 36" or so. Does that sound accurate? What typically happens with the biggest trees if that is the case? Its actually over 1300 acres coming down, and it appears that its  contracted to go to a couple of different mills... I'll contact them to see if they are willing to work something out. Thanks for the suggestion.
