Heard some scratching and noise on the deck and looked out just in time to see a bare tail disappear into the grill. Thought a rat so got an old BB gun, pumped it about 7 times and raised the grill lid.

It was a possum about 2/3s grown with it's head stuck in the back of the grill trying to get in. Shot it in the head with the BB killing it deader than 4 o'clock. Got to haul it off in the morning. Still laying there by the grill after 2 hours.

Never dreamed a BB gun would kill one.
Give me a new saw chain and I can find you a rock in a heartbeat.

Coulda just lit the grill  :D.  I'd never have thought the bb gun would take care of it either.

Nice shootin' with a BB gun. I have had them suckers come back after a .22! They're tough!

Shot one on the back porch years ago with a 22. Must have gut shot it because it's guts were on the porch. Got a big pot of water to wash it off and decided to use hot water. When that hot water hit those guts I came very close to having to get another pot of water to wash the puke off. Never again. Talk about gagging a maggot.

I was just going to say, Lots of people eat 'possum's.

I wouldn't eat a 'possum, I think they are about as nasty as you could find, and they look too much like a RAT.   steve_smiley

I shoot about 1 or more a month. They get into my city chickens, coons too but not as much. Anyway I use a 1400psi pellet gun with the barrel up against the head [ city cops get excited when a real gun goes off] and it sometimes takes 3 shots as their brain is smaller than a pea and protected by dense skull bone. It often get's bloody and not always humane. I've found that I can heart shoot one and it just drifts away peacefully with one shot.

My advice on aging gracefully... ride fast bikes and date faster women, drink good tequila, practice your draw daily, be honest and fair in your dealings, but suffer not fools. Eat a hearty breakfast, and remember, ALL politicians are crooks.

This brings on my outstanding feat of catching two possum, using one body-grip trap, in the same instant! Actually, I was trying to catch a bobcat in a 330 trap. I had elevated a plank to over 6' [from ground to tree, baited with a secret attractant [castor- venison concoction ] . Long story short..two possum apparently raced up the plank neck and neck to bait, fired the trap and SMACK..down came the steel killing both 'possums cleanly. Awesome!
