How many links in a 100' reel of chain?  I am trying to figure out the economics of buying a 100' and the necessary tools to break the chain to see if it's worth it.  Seems it would be.

Answered my own question.  1640 of 3/8

Sometimes a cup of black gold in a cup and a little cogitating will take you far.  :P

So how much does it break down to per saw chain ???

Kinda a rule of thumb I've seen with customers who buy a 100' reel. Mostly if they will go through, say, 22 3/8 20" chains in a year or more. Other than that it would have to be a doggone good deal. Price per loop now a days is really competetive. How much would you really save on your loops, even without factoring in your time and labor?
Sometimes you can get a great reel deal and have the company you buy it from break it into loops for youand throw in the leftover chain for you to have on hand for mending. That is a good option, if you will go through a lot of chain.
Gotta know when to fell em, know when to tell em, know when to walk away, know when to run....

It's quicker to go to the store and get a few loops.  I spend between 16-20$ for a 20" 3/8 .050 chain.  Depending on the store.  I go through quite a bit of chain.  Sometimes a chain a week depending how dirty the wood is.  I figured it would be a good rainy day project to just make up a bunch of loops.  I wouldnt be losing anything at that point.  22 chains at 20 bucks a piece 440.00.  A savings but not a whole bunch.

I can show you premade up loops cheaper then that (what you listed) for 20". Also shipped for $6 for 2 or more.  Lot cheaper.
I dont think I can post them here in open being they are not a sponsor here.

I quit buying bulk and just have this place send me what I need.  ;)

1640 is the number Oregon and Stihl use, Carlton use 1632.

Actual countings have shown other numbers, but not really far off....

When I was running my tree service we had 10 saws with anywhere from 16 to 36 inch bars. It was easier just to make up a new chain of whatever length we needed at any time. Now that I am just out in the woods logging all I use is a 20 inch bar. It's cheaper just to buy premade loops. If your running a lot of different bar lengths it is cheaper to make loops as needed, no need to inventory a lot of different length chains.

Unless you are experimenting with setups that need non-standard dl counts!   ;)

Oregon LGX $13.99 a loop for 72DL regular everyday price.   :P

Just as a general comment ,when the Chinese tried to capture all the scrap steel in the world prices went through the roof . It had been some time since I needed any chain and was awe struck at what I had to shell out for a 42" loop  of Oregon .404 chisel skip for an 084 Stihl not to mention a standard 72 driver loop of number 72 Oregon .

Here of late it seems there are new players in the biz of selling chain loops .Good healthy compition never hurt anybody .It pays to shop around some times .

Try that on 50 pounds of spikes. I had not brought any for 15 years?  ::)

Well there you go Chinese nails to go with Chinese plywood .Drive the nails with a Chinese hammer, hit your thumb ,cuss in Chinese .---which doesn't do the thing for the poor old thumb.

We sell the fast moving loops but .404 for a 42" bar is not one of them. We have to purchase by the 30 loop case so won't bring in oddball counts. Buy a reel and buck them off. Dealers are complaining but price for steel is going up.

I have several saws running .404 RSLF which was not a stocked item for my local Stihl dealer.  I bought a reel from them & they broke it down into loops for 25" & 17" bars. $10 labor.  I couldn't buy the tools to do it my self for that.

If they have the loops on hand I just buy the pre-made loops.  Could I buy them of the internet cheaper in the Oregon brand?  Yes, but I have great local dealers for Stihl & Jonsered & am willing to spend a little extra to say thank you.

Similar here. I buy local and am very happy. Recently I bought from a store going bankrupt some Stihl chain. One of the chains was 76 instead of 72 DL, my store shortened it free of charge. "Just put something into the coffee money can". OK now where were those old buttons.... ;D
