One of my downfalls (and probably one of my largest speed reducers) is overplanning.  I plan, replan, scrap the plan, then plan again.  In this process, I've started modeling the kitchen so I can make sure that there's no surprises when we start that process in the next year.

How do you all recommend dealing with wall cabinets and braces?  Do you put spacers behind the cabinets to stand them proud of the braces, or can the cabinets be fitted over the braces by cutting out some of the back and boxing around the brace?  For the base cabinets, no big deal, those can be boxed around the timbers, but the wall cabinets inevitably find braces it seems. I thought about standing all the cabinets off the wall clear of the timbers, but that sacrifices a lot of square footage.

Great question. I look forward to reading the suggestions.

How much brace protrusion into the room are you talking about? 2" or more?

What will the angle braces measure out to be?
My thought is to notch out the braces, as they are in compression and probably oversize for aesthetics more than for strength.

You've just presented yourself with an awesome opportunity.  Glass doors on that cabinet, let the brace pass right on through and let that brace be seen. Sure, you lose some usable space.

I have a shelf that has a kneebrace pass through and a cabinet.  No pics off hand.....well, i didnt clear the stuff out of the cabinet....trust me, it looks cool if its empty.

I never try anything, I just do it.

I am also guilty of over-planning - but I never regret it!. You definitely do not want to move the upper units forward in relation to the lower unit - you will have all kinds of problems using the lower counters and sink. My feeling is that you either use the braces as a design element (so you might do open shelves that follow the brace line and leave them completely exposed) or do as you suggested - cut out the backs (in which case I would fit the edges right to the post so only the top of the brace is visible). It would not be difficult to cut the backs out of the units (I once fit units to a geodesic dome by using this method)

The most common solution that I've seen is to cut the cabinet for the brace to go through it.

How do you plan on hanging your cabinets?

witterbound

What about leaving those few braces out, or putting the brace on top of the beams?

I had planned on hanging the cabinets on the exterior wall, screwed to the studs.

I don't have the height above the beam to invert the braces.  It sounds like cutting around the braces will work fine, and provide some visual interest.
