50 barn swallow nesting ledges were installed and 45 landowners agreed to keep their barns open during the birds's nesting season.

About 190 hectares of grassland are now being managed for bobolinks.

SD, do you have a shortage of barn swallows up there, or do you need to "entice them to stay" for pest control?  We have them all over around here in the summer, get dive bombed all day no matter if your in the yard, field, etc., just curious.

Used to be hundreds here on the wires, in barns, ledges over windows, under logging road bridges  on and on. I think the population is down more thn 80% of what it was in the early nineties. We had a cold spring in 1996 in May and a lot died off. Dead on the ground, not just a guess why. We still have lots of tree swallows, but their numbers where always a lot less. Not really looking at them for pest control, except the researchers. Anyhow, they just are trying to figure things out I guess.

There's still barn swallows around here but less then when I was a boy. I would give anything to see my area come back down to earth and stat thinking about our birds and wildlife but to be honest I don't think it will ever happen it is all about turning dirt.

I can remember them perching on the telephone wire here. Only see a few now.
