The mill has met it's match. Big pine wouldn't lift.

I mill very little pine, but when I do, I find it a pleasure to handle since it is so much lighter than oak. Maybe that's why I underestimated the weight of this log. 41" across the wide dimension on the stump cut, 18' long. About 34" on the small end. The Ole LT40 couldn't lift it. Ended up cutting it to two 9 footers. First time I've found a log the mill couldn't lift.

The picture is not out of focus, my face is always kind of blurry..... ::)

It's probably just as well you couldn't lift it as you would likely not have been able to turn the darn thing anyway.  I've been there.

I cut one about that big on a manual LT40 once. It was rolled off a log deck onto the mill. It was a beast to turn. It took me 9 hours to saw. :D

Wow, I haven't seen that one before.

I've sawn 34" x 16' Hemlock and the loader loaded them with no issues.

My tired old LT40 has loaded logs that my brothers Deutz/Allis 50hp couldn't lift.

I don't know what the limitation is on the loader of an LT40.

Yeah, but was it as BUTT UGLY as this beast?  :D This thing fought me every step of the way. HUGE knots, more waves than I care to mention. I knocked an hour off the bill because I was so upset at the results. The client didn't seem too concerned, but I was not happy with my work.

We also milled poplar and maple with turned out really nice, so it was not all in vain.

I believe it's 4,400lbs for the lift arms. It may be a little less.

That's definitely a big pine.  The biggest pines I have cut have been 18 ft and around 34 to 35 inches and very green.  I cut those on a manual LT40 and had to load them with a 416 Cat Backhoe.  The Backhoe would just barely lift them high enough to go on the mill so I don't know what they weighted.  We had to turn them by hand and I can assure you that it was no fun.  They guy had one left that had huge knots on it and I wouldn't let him put it on the mill.  I know that we probably couldn't turn it with those big knots and he wouldn't be satisfied with the wavy lumber out of such an ugly log.

Ive had a pine like that, it was already halved by a chainsaw mill but although the mill couldn't lift it the farmers tractor with the mill could!

What a pig that thing was.

Hello from the southern end of the First State. I recently had a Loblolly pine log 8' long and 46" in diameter quarter sawn. One of the loggers I work with logged the tree from Redden Forest and was going to leave the butt log in the woods because it would not fit through the metal detector at the mill. So I brought the log home and quartered it with a chainsaw, used a small wood-mizer to saw into lumber. My gallery has some pic of the log, guess I should add some pic of the lumber. Glad to know there is another member from the First State.

I fought a pine long the other day and I swore off anything bigger then 30". With the bad Tstorms that pasted thru today, I now have 5 trees down in my yard. One of them is a old red oak well over 100 years old. Well over 5' across. And yes, full of nails and rail roads spikes. Used to deer hunt out of it when I was a kid.

crowhill

I have a 14" hemlock in my woodlot that has 1" pieces of water pipe driven into it that was used for pegs to climb up to a tree stand at about 16' up. Only about 3" of the pipe showing now. I probably should just drop it to rot so I don't end up one day putting it on the mill!

we cut some big stuff in half so the mill will load it . just remember to raise loader arms while turning it or it could be bad ! Not that I know this . ::)
