A museum in Ireland had this interesting specimen that was pulled out of a bog ... carbon dating puts it at 8600 years old ...  I guess the bog is like the swamp -- no oxygen, so no deterioration.

Needless to say they wouldn't let me saw it.  ;D

Some woods can last an amazingly long time buried in those swamps. They stay wet, but no oxygen gets to them to allow decay.

Member HSV has dug up and sawn some 1800 year old wood that came out pretty good  ;) It was dated from the timing of the volcanic eruption that levelled the forest.

And this staircase is carved from 45,000 year old Kauri pine. The spiral staircase is actually carved inside the log. The wood is still sound and workable after begin buried for that long.

This is my little souvenir clock made from the wood.

Looking at the stairway really boggles the mind. Good pics.

Ok, this might be a dumb question, but how much does that staircase weigh?

BTW, very interesting way to gather logs  :D

I think the log was ~50 ton before they started. They moved it in, sat it up on the concrete foundation, and built the shop around it.  :D

I have some Kauri in small boards, interesting stuff, and finishes really interesting.

Wood found in a oxygen depleted muddy swamp BOGgles the mind....  That from the mind of the goat.

Only sad you beat me to that one.  Gets my goat so to speak.

W asked the Goat if he agreed.
