Started cutting a few logs this fall. This is new to us as we normally our logging during the winter with snowmobile.

We are cutting these logs and piling them with the winch near the mouth of the Mecatina River. Once the snow comes we will move them to the shoreline by snowmobile ( very short distance) . These logs will then be rafted home to the mill next spring . Have 75 cut so far, hope to make around 100 . No big logs but not too bad.
A different experience and I have had no snow down my neck nor have I tripped up with my snowshoes.

Yes mostly balsam fir with a few spruce mixed in. No flies for sure we had a edge of ice along the river bank when we came ashore in canoe in the morning. We also had the stove going aboard the boat all nite and it was still none too warm. High wind chill.

Hey there Quebecnewf,
I don't want to disrupt this thread, but I did want to send you a quick note and a big Thank You !!! Based on your suggestions and photo's we now have 2 plastic sleighs for hauling winter wood behind my Skandic and my buddies VK540. We have an 8' and a 10' and they both have their advantages.
Be safe on that early ice !!

The fall is always my favorite time of the year for logging. Are you getting very much rot in those fir? We logged an area this summer where just about all the fir were rotten to some point, and even the black spruce was bad.

Always enjoy seeing your logs.

No the rot is not to bad. Some butt rot but cut a few feet of the bottom and most of them are ok. Like I said not great logs but ok for this area. The butt rot we see is a common thing in balsam but we don,t see it much in the winter because of the depth of the snow. You cut your tree off up higher .

Hoping to go back into the mouth of the river in the next week or so and cut 25 more. The window of time to work there is closing due to ice forming in the river.

Sure is nice in the fall and it looks like you have some nice logs.  I am cutting just 5 minutes up the road from my here in Cape Breton,  Nova Scotia.  The picture is 3/4 cord ready to go to the customer.  My equipment is a walking beam trailer  and kubota l4740 tractor.

That looks like firewood I guess. The area I am cutting has been logged many times over the years. Never clear cut just cut a few and move on. I am getting most of these in a deep sided gully . Reason there left there is they were not easy to get using dog teams years ago and snowmobiles later on.

We are getting them by going on the top edge of the gully and winching them up with the portable gas winch and skidding cone. If not for those two pieces of equipment there is no way we would be able to get these logs.
