Hey guys,

History Channel had a fun show tonight on the history of logging on their Modern Marvels program.  Talked about all kinds of things.  Pretty impressive watching footage of those river pigs in action, moving along a river of logs, keeping 'em from binding up.  They also showed footage of some guys felling the redwoods.  The show covered the history of the circular saw, followed by the invention of the bandsaw mill.

One of the more interesting aspects of the show was the story of a lumber guy from California.  He milled in the Pacific Northwest, and sold it down in California.  Apparently, he would fashing the logs into massive barges, tied together with 250 tons of anchor chains.  The biggest of these barges carried enough wood for 500 houses.  120 of these barges made the 1100 mile voyage.

The show ended with modern technology in lumbering, with some machines that look like they belong more in Star Wars than in logging.  There was this funny looking crawler type job, that walked along on six legs.  Wild stuff.

Anyway, very cool show.  It'll certainly play again sometime, so keep an eye out!

Was a good show, my 12 yo son and I sat through the whole thing, he was fascinated.  We watched the following show all about Harvesting (Ag) as well.

I had been around logs and loggers in southern British  Columbia since I was a kid but came to Alberta in 78. Kind of lost touch with it. In 96, I went to work for a heli-logging outfit in the B.C. interior. Man, has it changed. Strokers, forwarders, and dangleheads. Whatinell is he talking about?
I'm sorry I missed that show. I have seen pictures of the oldtimers tobogganing down the chute Looks like a real good way to get killed. No thanks
