I talked to the fella today and, if he still has it on Saturday, I'm getting it.  Big if.

Sometimes low grade Walnut logs make some beautiful Chocolate Vanilla Mantels.

Danny, what pith? None showing on end cuts.

I have never seen a pithless walnut.  I have met a few pithless people though  :D.

If you cut into the bark, the inner bark should be bright yellow.

I don't think that your inner bark is bright yellow.  Plus, I have never seen a pithless goat.  All the ones that I have ever seen have been pithy.

I did a partial retrieval of the Walnut today.  Before today could get here and I could go get my last few cypress logs and stop for the Walnut on the way back, the guy with the walnut had a change of heart.  Turns out he wanted to keep the butt log, haul it the hour + to me to mill, in exchange for all the crotches limbs etc.  Well, since I didn't have to haul it and some Walnut is better than none, I accepted.  He did ask that I get some of the smaller stuff because he was afraid his trailer wouldn't carry the whole load.  I went to pick up about half my weight capacity of cypress from a site I had already visited and then stopped back by his place on the way back home.  Turns out, the main stem of the tree was not featured in any of the pics he sent me.  It was about 20" on the small in and clear to about 11'.  I brought home the stuff pictured below but I had to leave the two good crotches (one is still attached to the main stem.) I didn't take any pics of the main log so you'll have to wait until he brings it to mill.

Sorry for the blurry pics.

This is the best piece I brought back

Not great unless you live in an area where these things don't normally grow.

Pith is way off center

And half a truck bed full of little junk pieces that I'll still try to do something with

All in all, I'm happy as a clam.  I'd go back to get those crotches myself but when I checked the oil in my truck before I headed out at dark-thirty this morning it looked like a vanilla shake.  Did an oil change real quick and the truck made it there and back.  Picking up cypress, black walnut and a firearm I'd already paid for was too much to miss out on but I'm not going to make another trip until I replace that head gasket.  Tomorrow is the last Sunday of dove season so I won't be slicing this stuff right away but stay tuned.

send me a piece, if I start sneezing, it is walnut!   8)

Looks like a live Oak to me
That's what I thought when I saw the first pics but in person it's easy to see it's walnut.

Yes, all Juglans nigra, Black walnut, has a chambered pith.  If Danny tells you it's Easter, I would say you better start dyeing eggs.    :D      (old saying my younger late brother would say)
:D :D :D :D   i agree ;D

I had never seen walnut in FL until Saturday.  As for the fern and moss,  if you came to FL and stood still for more than about 10 min you'd have it growing on you too.

Are some of your creek walnuts headed east?

So... Had a funfilled day.  Started out with a friend at the local indoor shooting range and then finally got around to milling some of the walnut today.  The owner of the log brought it over right about noon, along with a really low grade ERC.  Originally, the whole tree was for sale for $100 but they decided they wanted some of the wood and asked me to saw it on shares.  Some walnut is better than no walnut so I bit.  Also, that meant they were responsible for hauling it an hour, rather than me. The ERC was on top so we go to that first.

They wanted some 4/4 boards for something or other so I was slicing them and they weren't happy with the quality of the log so they said they had enough.  I just squared took a couple more cuts to leave myself with a 6" x 10" mantel and got the thing off the mill.

Now for the main event.  We parbuckled the walnut right off the trailer over to the mill, easy peasy.

He thought he was helping the winch roll the log and we let him think that.

Was about the 3rd largest log I've had on the mill.

Yes, I know my barn door is open.  I was in the middle of changing a blade when I stopped to take the pic.

We got some nice 4, 8 and 12/4 boards out of the log.  All live edge.

After we got the big log done, it was time to put a fresh 4 degree blade on and work on a crotch piece. The log owners wanted some gun stock blanks and had me cut the whole thing 12/4.  I told them up front, I know nothing about sawing for gun stocks and they had never made one so we just took a stab at it.

Got some nice pieces

Sometime in the middle of this, an unsolicited pickup load of free cedar showed up.  I didn't ask for it or need it but I am addicted so I let them unload it.

I got about 40% of the lumber from the main stem and best crotch and the owner took the rest.  We hit no nails, which I figured for 2 yard trees was pretty good.  In addition to the lumber, they gave me various sawable pieces and some cash to cover the cost of resharp for the two blades I dulled and gas.

After they went down the road smiling, I cut into this little crotch.

I got various interesting pieces

and this nice bookmatch

@petefrombearswamp, we were sorry you missed out on all the fun.  Although the tree came as a seedling from TX, the folks were from up your way in NY somewhere.  Hopefully you can make it up soon.

You are much closer to walnut land than I am.  That was a once in a lifetime find for me.

I am closer, but still too far away from Walnut Land  :)
