Hi guys,
About 4 months ago we cut a pretty decent walnut that was 38 to 40 inch diameter at the stump and hauled it in on one of our truck loads to the mill. I have been wondering since if it would be worth taking the hoe and digging the stump up. I don't know how big the root ball would be or if possibly a burl under there maybe to. Just wondering what you guys think of it, is worth the time. I have never looked at selling stump or root ball before but have heard it can be worth a pretty penny if it is nice.what do you guys think.
Are you just going to lay there and bleed or get up and do something about it..Wyatt Earp Tombstone

You could slab it thick, like 12/4 and try to sell it for gun stock!

Root balls are like a box wrapped in brown paper; the only way to find out what is in there is to open it.  If you own the hoe and have some spare time, might as well dig it up.  Lots of work and possibly nothing but ruined blades but possibly some fantastic material.
You may think that you can or may think you can't; either way, you are right.
