When the auto return on my splitter kicks off it instantly kicks the lever all the way forward and hangs there causing it to cycle back on it's own. Wife smashed two fingers pretty bad the other day and apparently "teach ya not to stick them there" wasn't the right answer so is there anything that I need to check on it or just go spend the 70 bucks on a new control valve and try to prevent any more hospital bills

YEOUCH!!! It sounds like the detent spring has failed, I would replace the valve. A lot cheaper and easier than fleshy parts

I have "heard" you can take the valve apart and rotate the innards around to find a fresh spot for the detent to land in.

Normally you can fix the valves but if you have other people(like the wife) running the splitter I would buy a new valve. Try to buy a quality valve. The ones that come factory on those cheaper splitters usually aren't the best. One of the longest lasting detent valves I had on a splitter for 30 years was a cross. Hard to find cross valves. I have several prince valves now they seem to be work well have one in service now on a homemade splitter for 10 years no issues. Check surplus center web site.

Thanks for the help guys. I went ahead and done purchased a new and definitely much better made valve. Think I'll still try taking the old one apart if I can fix it I'll keep it as an spare if not I'll atlest know what one looks like on the inside

Here's a pic of her hand. Docs couldn't stitch it up because there was still pieces of wood in it.

That hurts just looking at it. Lucky nothing was broken or worse.

On those detent return valves the least little bit of foreign material that gets under the pressure spring valve seat can mess them up .I had the exact thing happen to me .Whatever it was I never found out but removing the pressure spring and cleaning things out then resetting it cured it .

How anything got in there I have no idea because it's not a vented tank and I have a suction line filter on it .Might have been a tiny little bit of dirt, weld slag ,who knows .

Now that poor lady's hand  .I almost had the same thing, almost got my pointy finger at the first knuckle not paying attention what I was doing .Only my cat like reflexs saved it.Barely broke the skin .It can happened to anybody .--and they wonder way I'm so dead set against auto cycle valves .A splitter could not only prune a finger it could take off a whole hand and never crack the governor on the engine .

Ugh, that looks sore!! She is very fortunate that was not worse (and you are too)!!
I actually prefer non detent valves, to me detents cause excess ram travel time, unless your wood is all very close to maximum length for your splitter.

Ouch. I hope she has a speedy recovery. For what it is worth, I dont let anyone else run my 35 ton huskee splitter for fear they put their hand in wrong place. I do however have two of the 5 ton electric splitters that are much safer for less experienced folks to operate and I am suprised at how well they split wood up to about 12 inches in diameter. You might want to get her one of those to use

lucky for him his wife is tough! I was back to splitting, stacking and delivering within 3days! and since then have done almost 40 ricks of wood myself! ☺

Know one guy where his finger was in the glove when he went looking for it.
Hope she will be ok.
