I'm trying to determine if a log trailer or a log arch would answer best my needs (used with an ATV). Most of my cutting will be done on the spot then loaded on the trailer. I'll be needing to haul quite a bunch of 10-15' logs (6" dia) for fencing and some 20'-25' logs for log cabin construction (12" dia). I'd rather have a trailer for versatility but is seems that for the 20' and longer logs it'd have to be an arch? I also don't think any crane is able to lift the longer logs either...which drops my options to winching only.

What would be your recommendation, arch and/or trailer and why (please don't say both :D)

Here's what I've eyeballed so far :

  • Arch
    • Log Rite
    • Iron Baltic
  • Trailer
    • T-Rex
    • Muts
    • Novajack
Must say I like the Muts as it converts to a log arch but the winch is limited to 900lbs. T-Rex Woodland winch is 2000 lbs rated but doesn't convert to a log arch. Specs also says 12' long logs top. What is cool about the NovaJack is that I can use the same trailer to carry the ATV and to haul logs around (doesn't seem as off-road capable as the others though)

I have 2 sleds I bunk wood and logs some with a horse but some times I use it behind the bike.Works good in winter on frozen road and easy to make

My first thought, get the log arch you want and fabricate a cargo box to fit where the log would be carried to convert the arch into a utility trailer. Other than that, a well built utility trailer might be the best way to start out, letting you get a better understanding of your atv's capacities and limitations. My Grizzly spends more time pulling a trailer than it does empty.....Scott B.

Are you going to be moving the logs mostly uphill or downhill ?

If you are mostly going downhill with the weight, I'd get an arch because it can add some braking.

I would also go with an arch because you could drag a log somewhere Before you turn it into firewood.

I moved a large heavy pipe with a trailer... used a backhoe to put it on the back edge. 18" diameter cement coated 20' steel pipe. Had to drag it about half a mile. Exciting !
