  Before giving up on 3 phase, contact "Shopteacher". He is near Pittsburgh and can help design a Rotary Phase converter for making 3 phase from single. There will be a much greater selection of machines available with 3 Phase, and should not cost as much to run as single phase.

 Bibby and Mary run a 25HP electric Sawmill with a Phase Converter, for example.
All truth passes through three stages:
   First, it is ridiculed;
   Second, it is violently opposed; and
   Third, it is accepted as self-evident.

Hi summerjob:
A heavy duty industrial electrician told me the life expectancy of a 3 phase motor is about six times that of a single phase motor.  I questioned it and started asking other electricians. They gave different numbers - four to eight times but they all agreed motor life was greatly extended with 3 phase.  So, that might be a consideration.
Don't dream it, be it.

There is no question that running a 3 phase unit will provide for more options of different machinery and in most cases larger drive motors.

My single phase logosol (261) has 3 hp motors, it's sister 3 phase unit uses 4 hp motors, The commercial machines that you can find at auction are all 3 phase at economical purchase prices.

Good luck with what ever you choose.

I have contracted out some flooring work and must say it was easy, deliver and pick up.  But I think it was expensive and the yield out of the boards I brought was no where near what I would have produced.  If you go that way I would suggest you take only stock close to the same width or take the time to rip them the same first.

I make lots of v match, tounge and groove, moulding/baseboard/window trim and shiplap using table saw, grizzly 8" long bed jointer, belsaw planer moulder and router.
