I've seen various plans for chainsaw (Procut) and bandsaw mills available.  Besides the book, Building a Circular Sawmill by Richard Buxton, does anyone know of any plans or information available for making your own circular sawmill--either with a moving log carriage or a moving saw blade?

This winter I came across a 2 abandoned circular mills in the woods one on a trailer. One under roof.  Might be worthwhile to ask around someone might know of one -- you could go look at and reverse engineer.
Lot of stuff..

Thanks for the responses.  I presently in  Montenegro (former Yugoslavia) where I am involved in a missions project to help put people to work through making firewood and milling lumber.  There are no circular sawmills nearby that I can examine to reverse engineer.  The link to Linsays, is for the book I already mentioned, which has some good information, but no straight forward plans.  We've been using an Alaskan set-up so far and would like to improve on our output.  Thanks again.  Looking forward to more reccomendations.

Stan, would you have access to the one main ingredient? The sawblade?

That is one of the ingredients I would have to buy--I would also have to buy the equipment for sharpening and maintaining the blade--there are a number of manufacturers in europe.  I would like to be able to build the rest from locally available steel and a locally obtained engine of some kind.

Thanks for the interest.

I've seen circular sawmill plans on E-bay on occasion.  Run a search using sawmill plans and saw mill plans and something will come up.  Right now there are plans for bandmills.

Really, other then the set works mechanisms, and dog assemblies, there ain't much to a circle mill. I can tell you, you must start with a firm foundation.

You need a husk frame to support the saw arbor, a track assembly, and a carriage. Some way to drive the carriage back and forth on the track, and a power supply to the saw arbor.  If you had a chance to visit an older mill, you might see the basics.

The Meadows Mills web site has some general details of their circular sawmills at  http://www.meadowsmills.com/

The book "The Circular Sawmill" by C. H. Wendel has numerous pictures of older circular mills.

The Belsaw mill is one of the  simplest designs.

Good luck with your  venture.

Swede

Stan.

I think You can buy a used sawmill in Sweden for SEK 30 000 - 100 000.00.
13 km from here is one and I think there is a grider on it. The engine is a Scania 36-S (4-cyl diesel).
2 km. from here is one but a wreck and no engine. There is also an edger.

I´ll ask for it if You want me to.

Swede.
Had a mobile band sawmill, All hydraulics  for logs 30\"x19´, remote control. (sold it 2009-04-13)
Monkey Blades.Sold them too)
Jonsered 535/15\". Just cut firewood now.

ADfields

I never knew Scania made small motors.   That is the company that makes trucks and I'm not mixing up spellings am I.

ADfields.

YES! They makes trucks and busses. I don´t think they do this 4-cyl. any longer. Most of them was used in the army.

Thanks for all the replies.  I've looked at some of the websites and pictures, and have ordered the Wendel book.  I've found much helpful information, but I still wish that I could find some plans.

Swede--thanks for the information.  It's good to know that you have mills available at those prices--could you give a little more information about the features of the mills through the price range.  When we have more capital available, I will contact you for more information.  I'd love to be able to get one of the wrecks you mention for free or inexpensively--but the distance makes that prohibitive at this time.

I work at an old Frick 001 on the weekends and have an American 001 I am restoring.

What ever photos or measurements you need, I can provide.

I am also drawing up parts as I go and can provide PDF plans somewhere down the road.

Welcome to the FF Greg Sprock,  unfortunately this post is over a decade old.

Tell us a little more about yourself,

Oh, my, aren't I embarrassed? I should read the details, I guess.

I have volunteered with a steam-powered mill at Chippokes, VA and now at Borden's Sawmill in Hayes, VA.

We have a turn-of-the-century American that we are restoring in part with wood we mill at Borden's.  The power plant is a mid-1930s magneto fired Waukesha and will produce about 50 hp to swing a 62" blade.
