Good day to all, i was just wondering if anyone knew how you identify the year of a stihl saw from the serial # or any other way? Also what does the ms stand for as in ms460? Thanks in advance, Ray

 Hi  Cord _Wood,
Could the MS stand for Magnum Sthil.
This is a good question, as i just bought a 460 yesterday.
Let me know what you find out.

Thanks for all your replys, i did what Kevin suggested and emailed stihl canada with model # and serial #. They emailed me back with date of manufacture and who originally bought the saw. Your guess is as good as anyones as of what the ms stands for.

Actually, no, it isn't.  Stihltech is bang on.

The MS is the abriviation for Motorsäge...german for "Chainsaw" but chain meeans "Kette", we call the Chainsaw also "Kettensäge"...cause also a electrical Cirkular saw is a "Motorsäge", only electrical driven.
The 2 letters at Stihl stuff always name the tool
a blower is a  BG=Blasgerät.
Hedgetrimmer HS=Heckenschere
Brushcutter is FS=Freischneider,
Stonecutter is TS=Trennschleifer,

Welcome (guten morgen) to the forum. Thanks for the input on the abbreviations (also Stihltech). Makes more sense now, and the FS fits with my brush cutter.
Now, how about the HT on my tree limb/ pole trimmer (HT 75)?
