Considering my options for gaining about 1" of height on my leaf springs. Mostly portable milling with this mill and always park on 2x6's under tires to get an edge on setting up. Log loader always seems to need some shovel work to lower it even more. Minor additional height in spring area would be helpful. Bad idea?

Magicman

Maybe not a bad idea at all because I regularly have to dig down a bit for the loader feet.  Then I guess that I would have to put a 2X6 under the loader feet to bring them back up.  ::)  That ''Murphey" guy is always tagging along.   :-X

Thanks for the vote of confidence Magicman. Guessing an "add-a-leaf" might be the way to go.

I have never really looked at my sawmill's suspension but it has a Dexter axle under it.

Yes, Dexter axle here also. Raising springs by about an1" would gain a little ground clearance except for axle tube, but just looking to get a head start on outrigger setup. Presently when I drop outrigger on level ground, they stand about 1 inch above bunks. I want all to be solid footing of course , but need to go a little more to get loader arms to lay flat. Larger diameter tires would help but seems overkill. My older lt40 runs a smaller rim size than any newer mill.

Don't know how the 1990 models were built but my '87 has a sub-frame that holds the axle assy.  I added spacers between the main frame and the sub frame.

If the springs are attached directly to the main frame you might be able to just make a couple of longer spring shackles, much the way you can on older vehicles to get a suspension lift....or remove the spring mounts and add spacers between them and the main frame.

Yes, also a subframe. I'll take a look.
Thanks.

Replaced the original WM 3" shackles with 5" shackles. Gained 1" of height overall. The Dexter axle has been rolled forward a couple of degrees but guessing that will be OK. Center of gravity during towing will be 1" higher also. Other than shackles looking taller , should be just as stable. We'll see.
