I normally break very few bands. They usually get tossed as being too narrow from repeated sharpening. Today was the exception, four broken bands sawing one Red Pine log.  :'(  The worse part was these were all bands that had been only sharpened once.

Some thing out of adjustment? Guide rollers? What mill do you have?

Chet, very possibly you have gotten a bad batch of bands, did they break at the weld.? And have you received good service from others in the same lot if so something has changed as Tacks says. Frank C.

I usually get 8-10 sharpenings on my Wood-Mizer 10° 1¼" Double-Hards, but a couple days ago I had one the developed 6-8 cracks at about 500 board feet on the second sharpening!  smiley_headscratch

This is not normal, so I'll be checking often!

Three problems that I have encountered.

(1) Blade too close to, or running against the roller guide flange. If this is the case, you will see multiple cracks in the gullets.

(2) Bad welds. The break will be at or right next to the weld. There will be no other cracks in the blade.

(3) Bad batch of blades. It only happened to me once. Try blades from another shipment. This is the least likely problem, but it did happen to me once.

I hope this helps,

Recently, I had 3 out of 15, new Woodmizer 7 degree turbo blades break at the weld.  Sometimes, you get a Monday morning batch!

WM will want those weld broken blades back so that they can identify the particular welding machine.  Yes, both the welding and grinding is done by machines, not by hand.

If they pay for the shipping, I'd be glad to send them back.  Problem is, more than the blades are broke.  My wallet is also broke from all the rain we've been having! ;D

I had  idle side band wheel bearings go bad once. I was breaking lots of blades until I figured out that's what it was.

I don't think it was anything to do with the mill. After the fourth broken band I used only older ones the rest of the day and no problems. Today was the same, no problems, until I put on one of dem newer ones. Not even 4 feet into the cut and another broken band.  >:( None of these broke at the weld.

I use Wood-Mizer Resharp.  Weld broken blades go to Resharp and are always replaced with new blades at no charge.
