Hi,

So I need to replace some planks on my Tudor home, as some are rotting. The planks are just 2x8 for the look, they are not structural. They are screwed to the OSB underneath. I think the existing ones are just plain knotty spruce. They are covered by an opaque stain that is pealing off in some areas. What would be the best species/grade of wood to replace it, given that I want to stick with an opaque stain, if I want to maximize lifespan? Would it be clear cedar with a rough finish to help stain adhesion? I live in eastern Ontario. Thanks!

Stain does not adhere. It soaks in.
The replacement wood needs to be dried wood.
I think Cedar wood would wood would be a great choice for replacing what needs to be replaced.

Green cedar will air dry in about 2 months.

Just be careful up on that ladder.  ;D
The older I get I wish my body could Re-Gen.

Another thing that will help is to stain the entire board, all 4 sides and  the ends this helps prevent moisture from getting in from behind and blistering off the stain like you mentioned.

Good to see you come in from the weeds there Sir Goat.
