maiden voyage on my d jd440b and something scary happens.  I am walking the machine to the site and I need to push a stump off the trail.  I drop the blade and the stump goes where ì want it to go.  I then back up and lift the blade and suddenly there is an ugly noise coming from the front of the machine and I have no hydraulics.    I think the worst, hooped the pump.   I get into the removal straight away and discover that the noise is coming from a coupler that has two bolts that connects the engine to the pump.  one of the bolts are missing.  I replace the bolt and no more ugly noise.  now how ever the blade shudders when lifted and the brake pedal jumps.    Any ideas why?   the hydraulic oil is reading full on the stick.

I dont know those machines but my forklift brake pedal will jump when it has air in the system.

The screech .. Do you think it was the bolt head grinding into something on its way out or the sound of a vane pump running dry and grenading?  Is there a chance a suction filter is clogged and sucking air through dryrotted hose?

I think it was from the clamp on the collar spinning on the shaft of the pump.  Is it a key way on the shaft or a spline?

If it is the same as the original, it is a spline.  My guess is that the coupler  is nearly stripped out.  Hopfuly the pump spline will still be useable.  I wish you good luck!

Does the 440 B have live hydraulics? I do not think so, when you push the clutch the charge pump is not working. The charge pump feeds the main pump. Should have asked if you have a clutch or power shift? The clutch 440's before the C model do not have live hydraulics. So you now have air in the system maybe?

power shift with a clutch and now the dealer tells me that the feller that sold me this machine is actually a straight 440 of 1966 vintage.

if that coupling slipped once toss it and buy a new one. the first 440 was built in 1965. the a late 60.s they dont have years like a car. the a had a 219 na motor ..straight 440 the motor was smaller and could have been gas..440 b 219 turbo

on my 540A that coupler has two pins on every side and a bushing on each one and then two half shelfs which hold the whole ting together. when the bushings were worn i could not find original ones so i went macgyver and bought the nearest fitting automotive bushings and adapted them
