Hey guys I have a tree farmer c4b that won't drive off the right rear once in a while it tries but then makes a loud popping noise the planetary and axel all look good nothing looks broke thinking it's in the main part of the rear end any thing else I should look for befor I pull the rear end out

GRANITEstateMP

did you pull the axle out?  Check the inner splines or if it may be broke in the tube?

The axel looks good the splines are all there doesn't look broken or like it's been slipping what would make it not drive off of that side it makes loud popping noise when turning or have a good drag behind it

The c-4s' should have a "locker"  in both axles. They look like 2 coffee cups facing each other with small square teeth around the rims. They are forced together with heavy springs and are made to push apart under a overload  (such as pulling a heavy hitch on hard ground and making a tight turn) and skip a few teeth and reengage. The first time you hear it, you'll think the axle blew-up!  If yours keeps disengaging, it means you have many missing teeth or the ones left are dubbed over on the edges or you may have a broken spring. Time to take a look.

The locker should stay engaged driving straight, but when you turn & one wheel turns backwards it should unlock it. But the center spring gets weak & teeth get wore down.

Thanks for the information guys I pulled the rear end out last night and will be tearing into it this afternoon I will let u guys know the out come

Dirtbiker24d

Can any one tell me after I take the planetary out and axel the lock collar I guess u call it it has a piece of mettal in the middle where the bolt goes threw if this was not in the right way would this cause my popping and slipping of the rear tire

It's most likely a locker problem I have a c4b also.

Ok the locker is located in the main fire of the rear end right? I pulled that out and every thing looks good but maybe I am missing something

Firewoodjoe

Got to be missing something somewhere. And yes locker is in the middle between the two shafts.

Dirtbiker24d

I was told this is a direct drive setup it has the teeth that interlock with a spring on each side every thing looks good how much pressure should those springs have I can collapse them with my hand with out any issue

Dirtbiker24d

Has any one welded the no spin togeather to instead of putting a new one in?

logman81

I would think the springs are to weak to keep the two interlocking halves together this is usually the case it's no different than a over sized version found in alot of off road jeeps and stuff.

I would also avoid welding it up cause two things will happen you will lose your ability to turn tight mostly unloaded and higher risk of braking planitaries or axle shafts.

Try shimming the springs tighter. Even tight tight is better than welding.

Had a C5D that would do the same thing, mostly in really cold weather.
Mechanically could not find anything wrong, switched to lighter weight synthetic gear lube and never had another problem.

Come to think of it mine does the same when the weather is cold and the gear oil is thick.

We had the same problem with our old C4B. They called the part in the rear end a "no spin" . We put a new one in and has worked perfect ever since.
