Hi,
1st post & noob to saws, so be gentle plz.

At 4:50 in the video the saw gets a metallic noise & slight smoke from the engine, then clears.

It's new got about 1 hour running and for the money cuts well. Wanted a Stihl or Husq, but for the small amount of use I'll give it too much $$$.

Comments on my "mistakes" are ok, but I admit it's been 55 years since I ran a saw as a 12 yr old kid on my Grandpa's farm in Maine.

Mostly like to know what you think about the engine, it's under 3 year factory warranty so I'm not much concerned & like I said, not a daily use.

Thanks, looks like a nice forum with guys helping each other.

Piston ring hang up for a few secs? I was was pretty happy where I dropped it.

Sounds like the clutch and / or clutch bearing. When you are revving the engine up but the chain is not turning because it is jammed or the brake is on the clutch is trying to engage but the clutch drum is not turning causing a copious amount of heat being generated.

One May consider cleaning and regressing the clutch bearing after that and avoid revving up the engine when the chain is jammed or the brake is on.

Oh and welcome to the Forestry Forum.

I watched the video. Looked to me like you probably got the clutch mighty hot when the chain binded during the cut and wasn't spinning, and was held at wide open throttle. That saw from what i can hear on the video is running lean, carburetor needs adjusted. Welcome to the forestry forum.

Thank you both, I agree it was the clutch not engine, more I think about it. I will take it down & maybe have a look for burned clutch. Would it look like a car burned clutch?

Is there a repair manual or schematic to do a "clutch job" on this?

:)

Is there a Technique for when the chain is stuck, but not from a "pinch", just stopping in the cut? Maybe clutch is slipping too much?

Chances are the clutch was burned up previously?

If you keep the throttle  pegged when the chain isn't turning (for any reason) the clutch if going to suffer. So if the chain stops. let go the throttle and work out why.  Bar pinched? Oil feed not working? Hit a horseshoe? Clutch is worn out?

So you back off and work out what's wrong and fix it.

If it isn't pinched, my guess would be it's getting jammed by chips, especially if the saw's on the small side, or the wood's especially big. Let pressure off and kind of "sweep" the cut to remove chips.

froggy47

Thanks, seems so that it just clogged from chips, this was some softwood, do not know what. Anyone on the request for schematic or general clutch servicing? Thank you all.

I'm not a wrencher, so maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe 19 should fit inside 15. When the engine gets fast enough, the clutch spreads engaging the hub(like a drum brake) causing the chain to spin. You'd want to inspect the hub and the clutch shoes.

If its under warranty take it to the dealer and let them look at it.

I wont get in to the details of the clutch repair as I'm not familiar with ryobi except that they are mostly generic meaning that most saw clutches operate is similar fashion ie. spring loaded friction pawls grabbing the drum to engage the chain. That was absolutely clutch noise, but since there is a warranty no need to detail a repair journal on here
Mainly my post is to second the guy that described the reason for chain/clutch slipping That tree looked really wet and softwood when wet (saturated) is gummy which requires a lot of patience and kerf cleaning it sounded like you were forcing the cut albeit a good wedge cut the technique was great just a bit forceful on the approach (let the saw do the work) perhaps the adrenaline was flowing a bit fast LOL it happens
another point I would like to make is that in a few spots you made me real nervous like when you held the saw running blade behind you brake not engaged stepping over and around the 4x4's if you had tripped you would have fallen on the saw but I can't tell you how many times  I have done the same exact move  but as easy as that saw was to start I think stopping the saw when not ready for using is or would be a better choice ..... enjoy and again nice wedge cut sir !

Thanks, I'll look at the clutch myself, easier than dealing with a warranty claim, probably just check for broken springs & sand off any heat glaze. So I take it there is no clutch adjustment?

I know I need to be MORE DELIBERATE in moving around the work area. Thanks for reminding me.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Got it at Home Depot, I am not sure as they would tell me to deal direct with mfg so that means shipping & boxing & all that crap, I'll diy, that's me. Be fun to open it up, just wish I had a schematic.

That's nice, thanks, does not get into taking apart the clutch unfortunately.

Yeah I was trying to gas it out of being stuck & burning the clutch, lucky still ok, it's not a bad little saw. Got it for $125 out the door from HD with 3 year warr. For what I plan to do, good enough.
