I have been using a 15 HP diesel motor that runs at 3600 rpm.

I am building another mill that I want to power with an electric motor... any ideas what I should use that would be equivalent?

Thanks

Ianab

Rough reckoning, a 10HP electric would maybe match a 15HP diesel, or a 20 HP gas.

Electric has the advantage that if revs do start to drop, the torque actually increases (within the limits of the motor). With a gas engine, if they load up the revs drop, AND the torque also drops, leading to the engine bogging down.  With electric the extra torque gets through that knot without a serious loss of speed and as long as you aren't overloading things you just keep sawing.

I went from 20hp gas to 7.5hp electric and i love it. it's all i need.  with 10hp 3phase you will be good for anything

Yes we have 3 phase - but wasn't sure whether to opt for single phase so I can run the mill off a generator if the power goes out. I live in East Africa. Power outages are a regular occurrence. I can't get a single phase over 7.5 HP though

I'd go with a 15 hp 3 phase, there's  always plenty to do when the power goes out.  Steve

Oh. I didn't know you had 3 phase. Forget the single phase, use the 3 phase luke. 8)

Why cant you get a single phase over 7.5?   I have a 10 hp. single phase on a edger.  220 volts.  Its only money.  Tim
