hello,

Im having problems with my 661, it just wont start after sitting for 2 months. I use premium 91 gas 50:1 sometimes slightly richer if running hard. Decompression valve is taken out, the piston is not scored, good compression. The engine is getting a spark, and receiving fuel (I flooded it). Also after I take the muffler off, it pops once. I doubt its a carb issue, im leaning towards other possible timing or a part which I forgot the name of.

any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been using this saw for milling.

thanks!

how long have you had it?  I had one and it had intermittent trouble.  the dealer finally got a rep to authorize a return and I got my 880.  trouble was warm starts and 3 trips to a good dealer and they replaced random stuff, but really did not know what was wrong.  we have some good chainsaw guys on the forum so they will chime in soon.

hey,

I've had it for awhile, only recently started milling with it, no mods, all stock. At least 50-100 tanks through it. never had a problem, usually started right away, better than my new 461. Now my hands are blistered today, I've ripped it apart and put it together, just a little stumped. heard it could be a short with the choke switch, but it's late now and I'm into the beers.

It can only be a problem with fuel, compression, or a well timed spark - to get it to fire at least.

All 3 are easy to test - try a bit of fuel down the plug hole or air intake with filter removed. After sitting a few hours or overnight so you know it's not flooded or pooled.
Compression test it.
And buy or borrow a cheap test light and make sure it's sparking with the plug in (under compression) at the right time.

I always scoffed at people saying try new plugs but I've now seen 2 completely fail in my lifetime and the fix was nothing more than replacing them lol...

New sparkplug is a cheap and easy test, i have also had them fail.

May just still be flooded. Try holding it wide open and see if it will clear out.

There is not much it could be if the saw has compression and spark. It is not likely old enough to have an air leak.

So, that leaves the fuel metering solenoid that plugs in the carburetor.

hey

thanks everyone for the comments.

First thing I usually do is pop a new spark plug in, because thats the easiest fix. Ive actually tried everything listed so far yesterday. I bet it might just fire up this morning when I try it. If not, its other timing or carb

if and when I do figure it out, ill post the problem.

it sucks because I have 6, 10.5m x 1m cedar logs sitting wanting to be milled.

The timing can only be off if the flywheel key has sheared which is unlikely unless the flywheel has been removed and the nut not properly retorqued. It was probably still flooded.

Can you wind the piston to tdc then open throttle and flip saw upsidedown to check if it's pooled? Never done it just thinking out loud. I used to have an RC nitro engine that would build up in the ccase if tuned wrong

hey

the initial flooding (yesterday) I took off the muffler and let it sit out in the sun until dry.

new issue, (still wont start) now with the throttle fully open the compression is wild high, and hard to pull and catches sometimes when pulling. it is not flooded (lock out) but almost feels like it, I only pulled in 6-10 times.

I really dont want to take it to the dealership, its a 2 weeks turn around at least, and not cheap.

after reading into it, I believe it may be a solenoid issue. Is there anyway of testing this other than replacing it?

ZeroJunk

If you change it you will need a torx wrench with the hole in the center, although I have take them out with a small pair of vise grips. That is not the right way.

called the dealership and they have the mtronic EPA kit to make my 661c into an mc for 104$ cdn however, its on back order.

so the plan will be to buy the old version black solenoid for cheap ($50cdn) which ive read is a crap part and prone to breaking, and order the EPA package for the future.

I hope 2 things, first that this is the issue and second that they have the old version black solenoid on hand. Because Im physically going in tomorrow.

thanks for the help, Ill keep ya'll posted.
