Ok...Before I will get on with my work.... I'll change my name.......So in the future you'll be seeing me as:

Edo

my real name...

Yep... A dutch guy, working in Costa Rica, speaking english in a forestry forum... :D...

Tom

Hey Edo,
I've got a Dutchman living down the street from me, his name is Kase.  Gotta get used to unfamiliar names. :P

Just out of curiosity, when you stumbled on the Forestry Forum, did you fall flat on your face or did you do two or three of those tricky little steps and land on your feet? :D

I hope you have a digital camera.  I'm sure interested in looking at some of the landscape from down there.

I'm interested in the wood politics down there too.  Do you have invironmentalist spiking trees and tree sitting and putting nooses around their necks a hundred feet up? What's the public reactions to logging?   What's the Governments say on sustainable forests?  What do y'all think of clear cuts as opposed to selective harvesting.  Do your forest favor one type of harvest over the other?  Are your harvesters heavily mechanized or is there still a lot of chainsaw work?  Are you cutting mostly saw timber or is there a pulp market?  Are your markets local or do you mostly export?  Are your mills mostlyBig mills or do you have a a developing industry of small band style mills and/or portable operations?

Boy do I have a lot of questions.  I could ask them on and on.  "Curiosity killed the Cat", I understand, so I'll shutup for now.

Edo

Tom...

I slipped on one of the bananas you find lying around here everywhere... in the banana republic of costa rica...

 :D :D

I do have a digital camera... I'll see what I can do... ;)

Tom

Simulated drum roll and rim shots.  rrrrrrr boom boom.    :D :D

Edo

Tom...
Hey Edo,

I did have some "environmentalists" experience in Holland...but here in Costa Rica the population is cutting trees all the time so there's not a lot of uprising.

I work in forestry plantations...so I don't think that "the environmentalist" can put up a fight... because in my opinion...plantation forestry is THE tool against deforestation, because convincing people to stop using wood is a naieve dream.
The Costa Rican Governement is really positive about forestry plantations. Many subsidies, Tax arrangements etc. are available to make forestry investments more attractive. There are also subsidies to protect natural forests etc.

Harvesting is a chainsaw job. in worn jeans and a t-shirt, men are working with no protective gear at high temperatures for a low salary. On the Teak plantations this differs some, because of the FSC regulations.

The Mayority of hectares of plantations are planted with "MELINA" with is a pulp and paper tree (some for pallets)
The Teak plantations are mostly "green investor" projects, and their goal is "high" quality timber.

There are some "regular sized" mills, but most of the mills consist of one or two band saws and some additional machinary, to make furniture parts, panels, flooring, etc.

Ask along.... it's my pleasure..

CHARLIE

Welcome to the Forestry Forum Edo!  I'm amazed at how fast those Teak trees are growing. It wouldn't do for a guy to be standing over a small one for any length of time. :o

By the way, I've seen Holland from the air and been inside the Amsterdam airport many times on my way to Italy on business.  When I was looking down at the dikes from about 20,000 feet, I could almost swear I saw a kid with his finger stuck in the dike. What was that all about? ::) ;D

Charlie...

Better not stand above a teak seedling.... because with a mean Annual increment of 20 m3 per year on good soils... you would be in for a very unpleasent surprise... :D :D

Welcome Edo

I look forward to hearing about forestry in Costa Rica.

Frank_Pender

Edo, do you think some of those Teak would survive in the Pacific Northwest?  Lots of strange things grow here, you know.  :P Even some loggers and sawmillers have been know to survive from time to time. 8) 8)   Would it be possible to purchase some and have you send them my way? ::)
Frank Pender

Edo

Frank,  I am not familiar with the climate in the pasific northwest...

But if the climate is tropical to semi tropical.... when it temperatures do not drop below 20 degrees Celcius,

Than it should be possible.... otherwise.... I think the only sollution would be...building a BIG green house...

Frank_Pender

I always feel that a few tried out might not be to bad of an idea.  What are the chances of getting a dowen or so rooted Teak and see what I can do with them? :P
Frank Pender

Edo

Frank,

I will see if I can find some teak seeds, or a seed supplier that is willing to send some over to you.

the organization CATIE in costa rica, does produce improved Teak seeds, and they give out free promotion samples, maybe they are willing to send you some.
