Hi there,
There is a shingle mill for sale which currently has a 40hp motor. I will only be able to run a 30 hp motor as this is the size of my phase perfect. If I exchange the motor to a 30hp would this be undersized for a shingle mill?

Hello Panovak,

WELCOME to FF forum!

Check the specification plate on your PP.  Note the number of amps it can output.  A quick check shows a 30hp 3ph motor at 230V will pull 80A at full load.  So your PP must carry that rating.

A 40hp 3ph motor at the same V will pull 104A.

As long as you don't significantly exceed that number of amps with the 40hp motor you will be fine.  I suggest you use the 40hp motor, assuming it is working properly and not presently in need of replacement, and see if you can operate the shingle mill to your satisfaction.

Or to look at it differently...how likely are you to need or use the full 40hp?

The PP are generally UNDER-rated meaning they have more output capacity than stated on their spec plate

I have three shingle machines I believe they all have 30 hp 3 phase 480 v
They work just fine most I've been around run 40 or 50 hp the guy I bought mill from was running a genset when  he built the mill and was underpowered so that's why he  run the the 30 hp
