I've got a couple planers and want to start sharpening my straight knives.
Any recommendations on brand ? .. I had one ordered from Viel Tools.. For 2 months,  cant seem to get it here...
Any help would be appreciated.

I have a grizzly and it will do my jointer and 20 inch planer.  it is heavy and clunky like most things grizzly.  It does ok but you almost have to hole your mouth right at the edges of a 20 knife so it does not rock.  has a flat topped grinding stone.  It works, but not to the extent that I enjoy using it.

I have a cousin who is a machinist.  he does not sound anxious to take over the duty.

Made my own - build a wooden box, mount a 1/4hp motor w/ arbor & wheel.  cut a slot in the top for the rock.  play around a bit with shimming the height of the table or motor to match the angle of your knife.  clamp a straightedge to the top & slide left-right with light cuts.  make top big enuf to support the knife length.  use air blast if needed for cooling.  works slow but good, the price is right and it avoids messing with your table saw.

A friend of mine up the road has a tree service and uses a lathe to sharpen his chipper knives.  He chucks a long arbor with a stone on it, stationary between the headstock and tailstock then mounts the knives to a jig he made on the carriage and autofeeds the knife past the spinning stone.

I have a Makita 98202. I don't have any experience with anything else and have only tinkered around with planer blades so far but it seems ok.

A jig that rides the fence groove of a belt sander table ought to work well.  Make sure the belt is runnning at the tip instead of away from it.  It does increase the chance of grabbing, shredding a belt and throwing the piece into your neighbors pool but it wont leave a burr like going the other way.  PPE.

before I got my sharpener, I would tune them up with a ROS with a 320 grit pad, and had plywood with a grove cut in it at the proper angle.  I would use a sharpie to blacken the edge so I could see/adjust my angle and sand/hone the edge.

Here is the jig that I use to sharpen my planer knife. It is simplly a base and a top in plywood 3/4''. The supports underneath are made in maple. Note the slot underrneath to ajust the angle and slide the table. The  stone is white stone that does not need water to kool; it was purchased at Lee Valley for $46.90 can. 120 gritt

I have a Grizzly. It's a little crude, but then so am I😁 I haven't used it in a while, I do remember you have to be careful to not burn the outside corners of the knives. You have to apply even pressure. It keeps my knives sharp for me, I hate sending stuff in for sharpening. I sharpened knives for a friend as well for his Woodmaster planer, I didn't hear any complaints🤷🏽‍♂️😊

I've had a grizzly grinder for years and have messed up a few knives with it similar to what has been pointed out by others. Especially sniping the ends.  Seems to have a learning curve that would only improve  with a lot of use.

Could be unless if you do it a lot then it's just as sensible to take the hit and hire it done professionally.
