I picked up a dolmar 5100s that had a original 18" bar that was marked "Dolmar PQ 3/8 64", the bar is shot with tempering colors and burred real bad.

I bought a cheap 18" Trilink bar and the paper label said for dolmar 5100s, it is a .325 .50 72DL,,,, I put it on and only 3 drive links mesh on the sprocket, the 4th link isn't close to meshing,,,, just for kicks i tried it and shut it down after a few revolutions, I could tell by the noise, it ain't right.

Odd to me that the cardboard list the 5100s as the saw that the bar is for, but it sure looks/sounds like it won't work. Can't rotate chain by hand, only can move it about 3 drive links.

I went to Oregon site and entered the model of saw, 18" bar and it came back with 3 drive link options, a .50 3/8 68, .50 3/8 64 and .50 .325 72.

In my mind I can't see that sprocket covering a 64, 68 & 72 drive link chain,,,,, maybe 2 different ones but not 3.

Am I doing something wrong?

Is possible a sprocket was changed?

Please help,,, and thanks!

Welcome! You have come to the right place. The problem is you are trying to fit .325 pitch chain on a 3/8 sprocket, that won't work. The best bet is change the sprocket to match, I think you will be happy with the results. You can use 3/8 chain but the saw needs to rev.

Thanks a zillion,

The new bar is mis-labeled, it said for 5100s, BUT didn't say you need to change sprocket.

I did find a reasonable one on FEEbay, it's a "Forester brand.

Would a 3/8 .50 with 68 drive links work? (Original had 64)

Thanks again!

It wasn't mislabeled. It just happens to be a .325" pitch bar and you are setup for 3/8" chain.  The saw could just as easily have been wearing a .325" rim to begin with.  The packaging was perfectly accurate, it just assumed some very basic knowledge on the buyers part.  The saw you have can accommodate either - the bar studs and oiler hole line up, therefore the bar fits - so long as your drive sprocket, chain, and bar match relative to pitch, and your chain and bar also match as to gauge.

3/8" .050 68dl works fine, but your existing 64dl chains will be too short.

As I remember those 5100 saws could be had either way, 3/8 pitch or .325. . On saws that size I much prefer .325 pitch chains. You you need to change both the sprocket and purchase the correct chain to use that bar.

3/8 X 64 is not common in North  America but I have seen it. That is the European 17" bar that came with some saws.

Thanks so much guys!

A real wealth on knowledge on this site!

I just ordered one off FEEbay that was a 3/8 pitch so I can use same sprocket.

The seller "sound" like he knows the problems of a 64 drive link bar/chain.

THANKS GANG!

This is how he posted the auction:
**  THIS LISTING IS FOR .050 GAUGE 18" BAR WITH K095 MOUNTING AND A .375 (3/8) pitch .050 GAUGE 68 LINK CHAIN.

This is a replacement solution for Dolmar saws that had a 64 link bar setup that is NLA - No longer available.
**This is also a solution for many of the 58cc China chainsaws using 3/8 pitch.
