We had a local sawmill here burn and lost their mill. They are looking for another LT50 to replace it and Wood-Mizer is 6 months out on production. If you have or know of one for sale please let me know and I'll pass it on.

Does it have to be an lt50? There is an lt40 diesel in the for sale section on here.

They are specifically looking for a LT50. The Lt 40's are much more common.

ROUGH CUT

All to often you hear of a mill having been burnt.
I wonder if the main cause is using a flameable coolant for the sawblade like diesel?
Myself, I have an electric powered sawmill, but it's still a concern.
Been using windshield washer fluid, but lucky so far.
It's not how you get into these things, but how you get out of them.

Diesel or oil do not help things, but often it is the accumulation of sawdust and other log waste that starts fires big enough to destroy a mill. A source of ignition can be as simple as a overheated bearing, but most fires start during maintenance and repair of the sawmill.

general housekeeping around the mill and controlling where you do "Hot work" will do a lot to mitigate a fire.

I purchased 2 ABC class fire extinguishers and mounting brackets in past week for this exactly reason. I mounted one to the sawmill and one inside the bed of my truck. I also got rid of my plastic gasoline can that I use for the mill and purchased a metal safety fuel can.

Welcome to the Forestry Forum, Maine Miller!
Thanks! Been lurking here for awhile since I bought my 1st mill in September. I only live about 10 miles from this sawmill, and somehow I had not heard about the fire. Have bought cedar from them in the past. Nice people.

This is a great idea, I'm going order some myself.  While I hope I never need them, if you do you really do!

I lost a shed with a few irreplaceable pieces of old equipment 25 years ago due to an arcing starter solenoid, it was amazing how fast things go downhill...always more than a couple extinguishers in different locations since then. I also agree with the good housekeeping.

True that K-Guy. My plan is to just take them in to my local fire protection company (in this case General Fire and Safety) annually for inspection and recertification. That way I have documentation for the insurance company.

Have cleaned up mill site today and can sleep better at night now.
Thanks to puffie40.
Also, I have found that I can recharge dry chemical fire extingwishers by shooting them full of compressed air to about 100 psi.
It's not how you get into these things, but how you get out of them.

Check it .O ring will leak if powder contaminates it . Helps to turn them upside down once in a while and tap bottom with rubber mallet so the powder doesn't pack. Seen them hold a charge and powder be packed solid . :o . If it lost pressure and wasn't discharged best to get it serviced . I used to fill, repair and service them in another life.  ::)

K-guy, they've probably already got this handled, but just saw a very nice LT50 with 700 hrs on it for sale here in Minnesota. I think they're asking too much, $48,500, but that's what is listed.
