Yes, when I was a kid, they was deep fried in a deep , wide iron skillet made for donuts. But yeah, deep fried. Oh my goodness. :)

I call this my chicken fryer but this weekend it's going to be my donut fryer. It's about 4" deep.
Last week I used a small cast iron dutch oven.

That's the same basic design as my "camping" skillet except that mine is Lodge 15.25". My skillet is to big to use effectively on our stove UNLESS the contents are at least 3/4" deep. It's great for camping. 1 dish meals. mmmm. I'm making myself hungry now! But it is OK. I do that same concept with my Dutch oven.
