I used to ride a harley. Always liked the sound over the rice grinders. Last fall I bought me a ch20 kohler used to go on my mill and it came without a muffler and some other parts. But I didnt want to invest a lot of money till I found out what I had and what kind of shape it was in. So I made a couple of short stacks out of 1 and 1 quarter square tubing. I cranked it up and the thing brought back memories. It sounds like a harley. So I dont know how long I can enjoy this but will build a muffler only if these stacks end up being to loud. Ha Oh, by the way it sounds to be a strong engine with no smoke so I am hopeful. Will try it out in the spring. To cold out there now. Harold

Are you wearing hearing protection?  If not, its too loud.  Well, you should wearing hearing protection either way.  I am always shocked when I remove my hearing protection as to how loud it is when the saw is running full.

Never wore hearing protector on the farm. I have had a few jobs it was necessary but not here. I run my 066 stihl with the old style muffler. If it is to loud I will know. Its cant be as loud as a 1200 harley being it only about 600 cc. But thank you for the warning.

I worked as a small engine mechanic for years which led me into the helicopter industry in a support role. I didn't protect my hearing, after all I needed to hear an engine run to troubleshoot. I am now paying the price, audiologist said the loss of midrange is due to prolonged exposure to loud noises. Pepperpot mufflers are cheap and while not great are better than nothing. Pay now or you will pay later.

Midrange, is that where the wife is? Mine already thinks I cant hear her. Ha. I think they will always be above my head so might not be bad. If so might have to extend them a little.

Young guys tell me to get a hearing aid.  I tell them to quit their mumbling and speak up.  I have been wearing hearing protection for years, but not soon enough. My wife sets the TV volume on 11 and I need about 13 to hear what is going on.

I still have very good hearing and that's very much to the credit of my wife of almost 20 years.  She is an audiologist and has always encouraged me to wear hearing protection.  She did her project for her second masters degree on hearing loss in the fire service.  She always makes sure that I have ample sets of muffs, plus she has made me several pairs of custom ear plugs which I prefer to foam ones.  Likely you don't think the saw is too loud, because you lost so much hearing already.  My dad is the same way.  He won't wear hearing protection.

My brother's wife sent him for a hearing test complaining he is half deaf from doing carpentry for 35-40 years .

After the test was done the audiologist asked him why he wanted his hearing tested and he said "because my wife made the appointment" she said the good news is he only had a little bit of loss in one ear but not enough to warrant a hearing aid, the bad news is you have what we call "marital deafness".

A few weeks later he is telling the story (with his wife there) to myself and a friend when my friend says "it's not his fault your voice is the same pitch a circular saw"

Hilltop366,

It seems I may have the same marital deafness issue you speak of.
This afternoon while folding laundry my wife Stephanie told me she wanted me to load the dishwasher. An hour later she walked back into the room and again told me she would like for me to load the dishwasher at which time I replied how can I pretend to have not heard you if you keep bringing it up??😂🤣😳😇😂
She's a good woman and puts up with me all to well.

Definitely protect what you have for hearing.  Left ear is 80% gone, hammer bone was fractured when a keel set charge went off prematurely and we were still under water, at the time I didn't realize the impact it would have on my life.  It sure hurt then, but living with it all these years I didn't realize how much I read lips until all of this mask stuff began.  I can't understand someone at all in a store or other place if they are wearing a mask.  You become very self aware when you have no idea what someone just said to you.

Use hearing protection.
My loss is severe to profound I dont like crowds if your not looking at me i havent a clue you talking to me.
And my favorite is not WHAT! but I say it the most.
ALSO USE A RESPERATOR.
I have been almost a year messing with a fungus infection in my lungs.
I have been worried if I come down with the COVID my days may be numbered.
Good advice guys
