Hey guys, first post, sorry if I'm not doing this right. I remember reading somewhere that a certain type of post base (knife blade maybe) provided some amount of lateral stability that removed the need for knee bracing. I'm going to make a carport for my truck camper. Ideally I wouldn't have to make it too much bigger than the camper itself but if I have to include knee braces my tie beam would have to be higher or my posts wider. Trying to avoid. TIA for the advise. Total project is hopefully going to be 11'x18' outsides of posts, built with 6xs and a shed roof.

Hey Sfellars, welcome to the forum. Just some stuff to think about.

Permacolumn post bases have some moment capacity, measured in inch pounds  ::). Look at the length of the lever arm in inches... the post height above the post base. Now multiply that times the horizontal load pushing against the top of the post in lbs. It doesn't take long to get into some serious FOOT lbs of rotational moment. Also just because a connection is rated wonderfully doesn't mean the wood won't split around the connections when that lever arm gets cranked on.

Don't forget that the doors need to be able to swing open when the camper is inside.

Thanks! Think I'm going to go the burying in cement route then... Will let the timbers dry as long as I can before coating and burying them
