I have a friend with a bunch of grandkids. One is about 3 now, one is almost 30. He comes over with 2-3 in tow.  ;D  Well I say 2-3. That will be 2-3 kids. May only be one blood relative in the bunch, but the grand child with have a friend or 2 and maybe a cousin thrown in there too.
He's the one that will hunt me down in the woods. And all the kids will come a running too.
I am up in the woods cutting a tree for the sawmill, a hemlock. I am limbing the tree. I see something move and it's Doug. I shut the saw off and there are couple small ones running to me to give The Old Man a hug, they don't care I smell like chainsaw gas and wood and sweat. ;D  After the hugs and glad to see you are done, the kids are running all over the tree that I started to limb out. One end is limbed out, so that's clear shot, one part they have to work around the limbs to stay on the tree. It's a sight to see them having fun on a down tree.

Great story, made me smile!

I remember cutting firewood with one of my brothers and dad.  Learning from them.  Backing the 66 Chevy pick up down in the woods to load or use the 8n to haul it out on a carry all.  Fun and simple times, at least to me as a kid.

I wonder if they would be any help limbing that tree if they had a hatchet or would a hospital trip ensue?

Asking out of innocence really, because you know how responsible they are WAY more than I do.
Trying harder everyday.

I think I still would enjoy climbing around on a freshly felled tree.  I used to love to do that after dad cut down a tree.  One minute it was a standing tree and the next minute it was a jungle gym for climbing on.
I used to go out in the woods with my grandma a lot when I was a kid.  She would be out there cutting down all the small understory, such as sumac.  She would cart tons of it up to the house and chop it up for kindling wood.  One day I was swinging on a big grape vine and grandma decided to try it.  That was a mistake as the vine came out of the tree and grandma fell, but was not hurt too bad.  She dusted herself off and we had a good laugh about it.  I was Tarzan and she was Jane of course.

I betcha they would give it a try with the hatchet. Only trouble would be the hatchet would catch on something on the way down.  :o
