Got some little projects here. Also some cookies. Want to air dry, but also want to kill any bugs.
I figured a period of time in the oven would work, but need to know how hot and how long.

Thanks!

From what i've read, the minimum is 133 deg F for 30 minutes.  I believe that is USDA.   I don't think your oven is gonna let you set it that low, so whatever your lowest temp setting is.

for the wood.  the oven temp can be 160 overnight, and it is expected to reach the core up to 133.  I use a blanket and fluid warmer to do little stuff.  many use halogen work lights in an insulated box, and you could use a thermostat.

I had a piece of curly maple that had bugs in it in my office.  I put it into our powder coating oven and ran it up to around 450° for a couple of hours.  I actually forgot about it until I smelled some sweet smell wafting  through the air.  The bugs are most likely former bugs and the wood has an interesting dark color now.  You probably do not want to put your wood projects in the oven for several hours at 450.

as an aside, my hospital is getting a new warmer, and there may be a small one and a larger one (size of a standard fridge) up for grabs.  anyone interested send me a PM.  It will likely be free other than picking it up.  a donation could be made to the FF.

Just stick it in the oven, set it to the minimum temperature, probably 175F and let it be for overnight. I do that quite a bit when doing oven dry samples.

Take steps to save steps.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree.  Sawmills cut logs, not trees.

Kiln drying wood: When the cookies are burned, they're burned, and you can't fix them.

Sawing is fun for the first couple million boards.

make sure you smoke detectors are working.  If you plan to do this often, an oven in the shop is a good idea.  I used a toaster oven for MC calculations.

The USDA requirement is that the core temperature of the wood reaches 133°F for 45 minutes. Yellowhammers advice should more than satisfy that requirement.

Thanks so much.
Bugs are in the bark and cambium, so I suspect an hour at 170 should do it.

or are they?  if these are short term for the holiday then toss, that should be fine.  I have chunks of wood that a year later, I see wood dust/frass on the floor.
