I have an opportunity to take best logs from ~40,000bf (net) of Sequoia sempervirens and ~20,000bf (net) of Cedrus deodara.  About 20 standing trees of each, ranging from 20" DBH (my lower threshold of interest), with the redwoods averaging 32" DBH x 90' tall, and the cedars averaging 28" DBH x 70' tall.  (My net BF calc assumes 45% yield on a gross BF volume of the lower 2/3's of the tree.)  Falling by others, haul-off by me.  A lot of logs for my part-time operation.  If sold AD/green, it's a nice piece of business, and if KD, about double that nice piece of business.  I estimate 20 cents a BF to haul it to my mill site, and $1/BF to mill, and another 50 cents to KD in dual solar kilns over time.   Retail values locally in the $5-$10/bf range, so fairly good gross margin on paper.
Couple questions:

  • Best place to learn about log grading and current/recent log prices for redwood and cedar?  I've spent a few hours on the internet and thus far no obvious sources.  In particular I'm wondering about small branches on the redwoods.
  • Deodar Cedar vs WRC -- this blog on the Deodar sounds interesting, but will buyers turn away from anything not WRC?

Trying not to fill my dance card too full for the limited time that my crew and I have to saw and bake, but some of these redwoods are pretty attractive, especially those over 40" DBH.  I have some excellent Claro walnut, red oak, white oak, euc, live oak, etc. logs already on my property, and am trying not to overdo it on log inventory.  But the redwood mills quickly, looks great at almost any grade, and is easy to use/gift/sell.  Any input welcome.

Can't find my field guide at the moment but I'm pretty sure you won't find WRC in California except way up on the Oregon border.  Is this a plantation in Palo Alto?

The deodar cedar was planted at a sizeable residential lot decades ago, for landscaping screening.  Now it's all coming out as a new large home is being developed on the property.  It's not WRC, and it's not naturally occurring.

I've cut some deodar cedar, and quite like it. The wood is very light, durable and dries easily, It can be finished nicely, but like most cedars it's not particularly hard or strong.

You might have some buyer resistance because it's not a common species outside the India / Pakistan region where it's from. But over there it's a favoured construction wood. I'd think you could use it any place you would WRC?

I've used some to re-deck the foot bridge in my back garden. Just used 6x2 to make up for the weaker wood, and for a foot bridge decking that's fine. The Monterrey Cypress had done about 18 years, will see how long the deodar lasts, but I hope similar. We have a temperate rainforest climate, so even durable woods tend to rot eventually.
