Help with old Stihl 024 AV

Hello, new user here. I am somewhat mechanically inclined but not experienced with chainsaws.

Many years ago, I bought a used Stihl 024 AV. I understand that this is the "early" version of the 024 and some of parts are different from the newer 024/026.

The saw always was a pain to cold start. I took it in for service twice and had the same experience -- it fired up right away when they handed it back to me, and then when I actually wanted to use the saw the following weekend it wouldn't start. I always resorted to splashing some fuel directly in the throttle to get it going.

I decided to replace the fuel line and impulse line, and ordered parts off of Ebay. The fuel line from the newer 024 turns out to be a completely different shape and size and won't go through the hole to the tank. I got the correct part and it installed fine.

The big trouble for me started when I pulled the carb to get at the impulse line. After replacing the impulse line, I find that the barb on the carb fits very loosely into the impulse line. Isn't it supposed to be an airtight fit? If I need a different part, can someone point me to a parts listing for the early version of the 024?



A more immediate issue is that the throttle linkage doesn't want to work right. The part looks like this:


If I install it this way, the throttle opens the amount it seems like it should, but it slips off of the throttle arm:


If I install it this way, the linkage stays attached securely, but it only opens the throttle plate a tiny bit:


I cannot seem to find any diagram to tell me which way it should go. I'm not sure if I might have bent the part when I was removing the carb and didn't know what I was doing.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, or if you can point me to a better forum for this question, that is helpful too.

The throttle linkage rod is not an expensive part, I will just buy one and (hopefully) that will eliminate the question of whether the part is bent.

The dark colored part is the replacement, which fits just fine. So yeah, I bent the original just a little bit ::) 

It goes with the C-shaped crook hugging the throttle arm (as in the last image of the OP.)

Back up and running, but still a pain to start. At least I'm back where I started.

I have an 024 that I bought new years ago, like maybe 1990.  Anyway, it got to where it was hard to start, I carried it to dealer, no help.  Then joined this forum and found out that the choke plate that is inside the air filter would slip after many years.  Sure enough, checked mine and it would not allow the plastic choke plate to completely close when on full choke.  Bought a new filter and it has worked perfectly since.  The saw can sit a month, then when you want to use it, full choke it till it coughs, move choke lever up one notch, then next pull it cranks and runs.  Mine will crank and run after 3 pulls.  The 024's are sweet saws to run.  Good luck!

If the pulse line is loose at the nipple to the carb, that can cause a problem.  If you can't get the correct line, you may be able to take some small wire and wrap it and twist it tightly.

I was a pick up the saw and pull hard on the recoil.
Then a member said to pull slow on the rope 2-3 times. 
That makes a big difference.
Saw starts much easier now.

I've got an early model 024,my 50  dollar special .The only problem I've had was replacing the clutch drum sprocket to replaceable rim .I modified  an 026 drum  which used a wire drive oil pump where mine is worm gear drive from the crank shaft .As far as starting and cutting no problems except it is no speed demon .Keep in mind this model  at the time was the smallest so called pro saw rear handled Stihl . It's like 42 ccs ,smaller wood and limbing plus it's light as a feather and is easy on fuel .Nice little saw .

Another tip while I'm thinking about it  .This model plus the 026 used three different mufflers ,Standard,less restrictive ,more retrictive .Mine just happened to be the worst ,most restrictive .About 15 minutes with a die grinder I cured that problem  ,gutted the muffler so it could breathe  retuned the carb and didn't do anything more to it . It didn't get that much louder BTW but it sure did  run better . 8)
