Way over in the European theater my wife's father was 17 when the blitz came. Holland lasted a day. My wife's aunt took this picture from her window that morning.

Michelle's Dad was faced with going to a german bomb factory or going underground. He is the tall one in homespun there, and the only one of the men in that picture still alive at the end. I never saw any of this while he was alive nor did he talk about it.

That's his best friend Peter just this side with the round beanie. I recognize him from boyhood fishing pics. The last one I saw from those innocent times said "You still owe me a quarter". This is a uniformed Dutch resistance unit. That is the flag on their arm. After the war and the parade, the families of collaborators were not appreciative. Her Dad and Mom had to leave after the war.

Last night on PBS here in my area was a program that told the story of the guy who saved the last 6 sailors off of the Arizona.

How the survivors' son found out who he was and how he got that sailor a metal for his action saving those 6 men.

Very touching story.
