Ripping chain and bar

 I'm buying a Alaskan mill and in looking for recommendations for a 42" bar,and chain, size brand and gauge . I want a smooth cut and i dont want it to walk should I stay with 3/8 0.63 or should I bump up to a .404 .I'm running it on a still ms 660 ported so I'm thinking the 404 would slow things down but I also not doing production just occasionally a couple logs for myself ,I want to go 42 because I have a 36 in pine 60 ft long and a 32 in cherry stump so a 36 in bar won't do it. What do you all think thanks

Not sure about the bar. I'd suggest Stihl, but I think they go to .404 after 36". ⅜" will be fine for your purposes. I use semichisel chain. I had reprofiled it to ~5° on the top plate, but I didn't notice a big difference from the standard(30°?) crosscut it came with, so I've moved back to that to simplify my chain inventory. It could be I'm not discerning enough  :shrugs:

Iv got a 42" oregon bar .063" 3/8" pitch and i too dont notice a cut quality or difference using a ripping vs. crosscut chain. I run mine on a stock 661.
