Monday I was on my way home from a late meeting for work, driving down a backroad. I crested over a bridge and heard a clunk. When I started hitting the breaks to slow down, the whole truck bounced and came to a halt. This is what I found when I got out.

The first clunk was the top ball joint, then I hit the breaks and the lower ball joint went, throwing the tire under the A arm. The tie rod and break line held things together.

Called a tow truck to take it to the shop and my Dad came and picked me up. He just got one of the new Broncos so he said no problem, just drive my other truck. Wellllllll this morning at 5:45 on my way to work, the transmission in his truck grenaded about a half a mile from my house. Called the tow truck and it was the same guy ::) :D

So now I'm driving Dad's new Bronco with the warning that if I break it before he has the first oil change that I will never be allowed to drive something that he owns again.

You got the good out of that. Kind of looks like its walking home  :D.

Never had a ball joint fail like that, (though I've had my share of catastrophic failures). Good reason to take a truck in to go up on the lift regularly. Plowing snow I've worn out plenty of front end parts, I still remember years ago when I took my first 4x4 in to the mechanic. He put it up on the lift and grabbed the front tire... clunk-clunk, clunk- clunk... he says: "you're gonna wanna fix that".   :o
Then the fun part while it's all apart they'll want to do wheel bearings, brakes, u joints, axle seals...$$$$ ::)

I checked my lower ball joints yesterday.  Something in my 3500 front end was not quite right.  Ball joints still solid at 357,000 miles.  Steering box worn out.

I had replaced every moving part in my front end a couple of years ago, except for the lower ball joints.  Rather than just replace the upper ball joints, I replaced the upper control arms that had all new bushings ready to go.  It didn't cost that much more, and saved some time.

I should have prefaced this with the fact that my mechanic is one of my real good friends and he runs a very reputable shop with 8ish techs. He is borderline pathological about his guys checking every part of a vehicle while it's up on the rack for oil changes. He was on vacation with his family when I sent him the picture and he without a doubt lost his mind more than I did. He was *pithed that his guys would have missed something that would have caused this at my last oil change 2k miles ago. I drive almost 30k miles a year and my truck has been preventative maintenanced to death but I have no breakdowns. At 212k miles, she is just in need of extra love.

All is well now, they just called to tell me they got everything put together. Dad's truck on the other hand has not bee diagnosed, but I can tell you that it won't be good.

Log-it-up

Glad you didn't get hurt and surprisingly the truck body still looks in good shape when this happens to me it took out the fender too

DWyatt

Didn't so much as scratch the paint. The tire had to of flopped perfectly to miss the fender. It was just a fluke that I was taking the back way home rather than driving the highway. Very glad it happened while I was going 40 mph rather than 75.

Dwyatt - I feel your pain.   My 2020 Silverado with 40K on the odometer sheared the control arm.  My rig gets heavy use on gravel roads but this was a first.  I should have expected it as my office mate's 2019 Silverado did the same thing except on the opposite side.  Both times happened going slow on a well maintained gravel road.  Glad it wasn't the freeway but I'm on pins and needles waiting to see if the other side falls off too.

Lucky, if you can say that, that it happened on that road.
